Do you use packing cubes?

I use them all the time for just myself and have found I can fit more in the bag, better organized and tidy. I bought a set for my DH so he can try it out also. I managed to stuff enough for a full week at DLR in the medium and small bag then stick that in a 31 Cindy bag and was good to go. I am getting ready to pack for a 12 day trip with just one carry on (will wash clothes in the middle..we are first going to San Diego for a DH convention, then my Disney friend and I are going to DLR for Destination D), so this is taking some planning. I roll the clothes and you can still stuff extras around the edges of the insides of the bags and then around the bags themselves inside the suitcase. I just put the whole cube in the drawers, but do hang up some shirts that may wrinkle. I like to also take a travel size spray wrinkle remover, but need to check the size on that to see if it's under the airline regs size( I usually travel by train). I got mine from Ebags and they are very sturdy and have held up to much stuffing and shoving and still look brand new.

FYI: I found a spray bottle with water works just as well as the Downy wrinkle releaser spray I was buying before.

I thought of using packing cubes. I think I will experiment with it. I have some of those clear bags that pillowcases/bedsheets/comforter sets come in. I think I WILL look for opaque bags to store underwear - esp. since my DD is getting really embarrassed seeing them stuffed in all corners of the suitcase.

Right now I lay all our clothes flat. It takes up less space and also less wrinkly. I tried rolling, but don't really care for it (maybe I'm just not skilled enough?) I pack by day and each outfit for the whole family is packed together. I pack from last day at the bottom all the way to first day on top. I usually use sheets of paper labelled by day to prevent my getting confused and to keep it more organized! By laying it all out flat and by day, I only unpack our suitcase if we're staying longer than 1-2 nights. Suits, and delicate dresses that wrinkle easily go in garment bags.

I am really looking forward to them! I hope they get here this week so I can fiddle around with them!

We just used the ebags brand cubes for the first time a few weeks ago and we all LOVE them!!!! There are 3 of us and it was so nice to have all of our clothes separated and so well organized. I could say to DD, "it's in your bag" and because we all have different colors, she could easily go over to the suitcase, pull out her bag and have what she needed. They're really wonderful! We have the shoe sleeves too.

I also use the Eagle Creek packing cubes and the packing envelope (for larger clothing items.) I love them and consider them worth the investment. I got the random, full scale TSA search recently, and the agent mentioned that they love the packing cubes and envelopes.

I also use "homemade" Febreeze. I purchased an empty Nalgene spray bottle and fill it with water and a small amount of fabric softener.

Hey Dawn, I'm curious to see how they worked out for you!!
Did they work to just stay organized or did you find that they really saved space too?
We have been using the space-bags to save space and I keep thinking these will just add more stuff in my suitcase. We already roll our outfits together to save space & cut down on wrinkles.
As much as I like to be organized, that's a lot of money.
I'd love to hear your thoughts!
:goodvibes

I love my ebags packing cubes. I bought them on amazon.com for cheap. Prices fluctuate a lot on amazon. If you don't need them right away, it can be worthwhile to pricewatch on amazon. I save a lot by buying at the right time. You just need to know your prices and know when to pull the trigger.
Packing cubes are very helpful if you are not very organized.

i use lingerie bags for my small items. i have a few different sizes and then also use them when i do my laundry. i roll larger items (jeans/jackets/dresses) and use the other pockets in my suitcase to organize smaller items. it works fine for me. i thought about getting cubes but then its more stuff to store in my apt. so i stick with this system. i also believe i only paid maybe $5 for all the lingerie bags i have.

i just packed in them as we are hotel hopping next week, it will be easy to grab a bag just for overnight pj's and cloths for next day!

I have the Rick Steves packing cubes - they are great! I put DD's outfits in a big one, her swimsuit/undies/socks/hair accessories in a small one. Then DH and I have one each for our tops, one each for our shorts and small ones for everything else. I even use a small one for medicine, phone chargers etc. We also have a big one for all of us for when we stay overnight at a hotel before our flight (2 hour drive to airport and we always have early AM flights). Grab and go!

they save a lot of room in our suitcase - all of our stuff (2 adults 1 child) fit in one suitcase. For me, packing is like playing Tetris :thumbsup2

I am not for sure how much space I'm saving in Heys hard side luggage (using one suitcase) but I know I'm saving time for unpacking my bag. I have one 16 in packing folder and 3 medium packing cubes, 1 pair of jeans folded in half and 1 jacket laying length wise in my suitcase. The cubes and folder will go in the drawer, then hang one pants and a jacket, I'm DONE:woohoo: I have plenty of space around the sides to place shoes or toiletry bag.popcorn::

Did I mention I leave in 3 :hourglassdays!:yay::dance3::woohoo:

We have been using ebags packing cubes for at least 5 years. I had used ziplock gallon sized bags for the kids for years before that, but their clothes had gotten too large to use them. We LOVE the packing cubes. Each of the 4 of us in our family has our own colors that we use. When we get to a hotel, we can leave everything in the cubes and just store them in drawers. I love how neat it makes our luggage (ebag duffles), especially if we have one bag over 50 lbs when we fly on Southwest. We can just take a bag out and put it in an under weight bag. I also like that if TSA inspects our bags, it still keeps things neat and they aren't directly touching our underclothes. We also have a different color than the 4 original colors that we can bring if we are staying overnight in one hotel before a big trip and know it's pjs and clothes just for that 1 night stay. We also have the ebags bathroom kits for each of us in our packing cube colors. We just take them in the bathroom when we shower/get ready and it keeps things neat and tidy. They fit very easily in the side zippered area on the end of the duffles. I don't think there's been a trip that my DH hasn't said how much he loves using the packing cubes. We just got back from 2 weeks vacation and it was nice to just open up the packing cubes when we got home and everything was already sorted and easy to put away (I had done laundry the day before we left). We each have small, medium, and large packing cubes we use for different clothes and shoe sleeves. We also have padded cubes we use for phones, chargers, our video camera, etc. we bought from ebags.

I also bought the ebags ones and love them. Makes life with kids way easier and cheaper then zip locks. Each child has their own set of 3 in their own color. Undies in small one, shorts in largest, t-shirts in the middle sized one. Makes it so much easier for them to find their own clothing.

-makes my life easier at home knowing anything left in the bags is clean
-while usually each child has their own suitcase, when we share kids grab their own clothing easily
-I have had to dig stuff out of suitcases in public before and these make it SO much easier to quickly find something
-They do seem to help get more in suitcases but I find the organization part the most useful

I just ordered a set of the raspberry packing cubes, but when I went back to look at them, I'm a little worried that they will be more pink than red. Does anyone have the raspberry color? What do you think about the color?

I bought them from Amazon as well, but they were from ebags. They had free shipping ($25+) and free returns. With the set of 3 (cost was $23), we can fit enough clothes for DD4, DH, and me for 3 days. We plan to use it in our carryon and since we can pack so much in it, we only need 1 suitcase.

Chiming in to say I love them too! We leave for Disney in the morning and I just finished packing my cubes, suitcase is neat and organized and so much fits into the cubes! Get them, you won't regret it!!!!

I totally agreepirate:

I saw the Eagle Creek on a recent trip. I have never seen these before but thought they were a little pricey. After stumbling upon this thread I've been looking at the ones from ebags.

I'm looking at the 3 piece set and I'm wondering what you pack in each size? How much does each hold? (ie the lg size holds xxx many shirts/pants ect.) Trying to get enough to be able to pack for a week-10 days. Also what size do you need for jeans or sweatshirts(winter clothes)?

Thanks! I can't wait to get some of these.

Overstock.com has them at a good price too.

We currently use the air tight bags.

My questions is has anyone who uses the packing blocks previously used the bags and are the block better?

I used to use the air tight bags but made the switch to the blocks. love, love, love them. They keep me organized all through the trip and are much easier to use. I only use the air tight bags for storage at home.

I have some, and I use them -- or don't use them -- depending upon my needs:

They're great if you're packing two or more people's gear in one suitcase. Upon arrival, you toss his blue cubes into his drawers, your red cubes into your drawers -- done. No mix-ups.

They're great if you're staying in multiple hotels on your trip. Quick in, quick out.

They're great if your suitcase is searched -- no stranger has to touch your undies.

The small ones are great for packing a kid's complete outfit -- here's everything you need, go change. This is particularly nice for campgrounds, where the bath house is a walk.

Whether they keep your things "nicer" and less wrinkled depends entirely upon how you pack.

However, you will get more into your suitcase if you just pack things in. If you're packing everything together, you can put in your pants/shirts, then shove your socks and swimsuits around the edges. In a cube, however, your underwear-cube takes up just as much space as your shirt-cube. The cubes themselves also will add some small quantity of material and weight -- this would matter for a backpacking trip.

Yeah! Don't count on TSA not opening them!!!! Especially the ones that contain you undergarments! :) They opened mine and went ALL THRU THAT ONE!! Later, I was told apparently underwire bras are now becoming a problem! REALLY??? LOL!! The TSA guy was wearing gloves but I don't think there wasn't a piece in that bag he didn't touch! So all I am saying is don't count on it to deter them from going thru your garments if they so desire or feel the need. I was totally shocked and thrown off guard!
