Gail, it's none of my business, but I think you might have misinterpreted Johnnies post.

I think he was mockingly saying something about all of us, that WE would never do anything STUPID in our unit. He was joking.

Or at least that's how I read it.

KNWVIKING....your interpretation is correct.

I'll respond to your post....since I guess quoting certain DISers NOW equals cyber-hounding . Something about glasshouses and stones applies to that comment.

To the point of the thread, I was just curious about what services a DVCer (who doesn't routinely tip) feel go above and beyond a housekeepers duties that then deserve a gratuity. In theory, cleaning whether routine or under unique circumstances could be considered part of their normal job. For that matter, bringing missing or extra items to the room could also be just routine guest service.

I would think bringing MISSING items would be part of the routine job, and bringing extra or special items would be above and beyond. I was thinking more along the lines of the example about making an unexpected mess.

We always tip because it's just something we're accustomed to doing - we vacation a lot, spend quite a lot of time each year in hotel rooms and it has become a habit. I wouldn't look at a DVC housekeeper any differently than a hotel housekeeper with the exception they don't come as often. My experience has been DVC housekeepers have done a good job and are always courteous when we see them - they always have a smile for you no matter how many toilets they've just cleaned - they deserve something extra for that, IMO. I don't get those smiles from some hotel housekeepers. ;) However, tipping is very personal - some do, some don't. I don't look at it as a dues thing, I see it as a personal touch to these hard working ladies.

Ummmm....... who vacuums the rug, mops the floor, dusts the furniture, changes the sheets, cleans the tub and shower, etc.?

We are all fortunate enough to be able to take regular and relatively elaborate vacations while these people make next to nothing and clean up after us. More often than not they do it with a smile too. Skip a round of drinks or ice creams and leave housekeeping 20 bucks. It won't kill you and you'll be helping someone who needs it much more than any of us do. What goes around comes around..........
I AGREE!!!

$20.00 is a small tip for all of the work they have to do. After all, each of us expect them to do a very good job of cleaning before we get in the studio, 1bdrm, 2bdrm or GV! :D

I put sometimes. I do not plan on tipping yet my wife is not the cheapo that I am. We will probably leave something for them since we will be staying 9 days.

We do leave a tip for housekeeping on T&T day and full clean day(if we are there long enough) and when we leave.
I always make it a point to tell a manager at the end of our stay(if -and it always has been for us) How wonderful the staff was and always try to remember specific CM's names that did something for us and make sure they are mentioned. I think it makes a CM's day if they are told that a guest was impressed with their services and that someone took the time to relay this to their "boss". I think this helps to keep the MAGIC we all talk about replenished. WOW I really do babble!:D

We always tip. We leave a tip each time housekeeping is scheduled to be in our room and a substantial tip when we depart. We leave notes outlining any items we may need, thank them for their service and we have always come back to find exactly what we requested (ie pot holder, soap etc.) and usually a thank you from the housekeeper.

we have always found this group of individuals to be very friendly and hard working.

we typically stay in a 1 bedroom or larger unit and realize it takes a lot of time and effort to clean these units.

That said, we have had a few times where we've found a less than clean unit and called housekeeping to have it resolved. They've always done so promptly...for this, we don't tip as we expected better service.

If someone delivers something, we always tip. We have had occassions where they have refused the tip..but we always offer.

Tipping, like anything to do with $$'s is a personal thing. If workers depended upon tips for their income, I would hope Disney and others would post such information for their guests. We're well informed about tipping on cruise lines, dining etc.

What I leave for a tip depends on where I am staying.
I clean the entire time I am at DVC (as I have little kids) If I would clean it at home I will clean it there. I typically leave $10 at the end of a 5 night DVC day. I consider that a trip for the service provided on trash and towel day. As I have cleaned during the week.
In contrast when I move over to AKL for the weekend. I will tip $5 per day. If the Mousekeeper is exceptional or even overly friendly, I will tip $10 per day. It all depends on the person and the level of service.
Last time we were the there the mousekeeper was a wet noodle. She got $5 per day.
The prior time we had Laverne who was superb I got to talk to her several times before the end of my stay. She got $15 dollars a day. and I left a package of candy and Disney money for her young son.::yes::

I tip at all hotels, motels, resorts and DVC. I don't care if it's considered a tipped position by Disney. I have always tipped housekeeping.

I tip $4 - $5 a day for my family of 4. I leave a smaller tip for T&T and then I leave $5 x how many nights, at the end of the trip.

I also tip the turn down service maid too.

I'm a housekeeping tipper and proud of it. I couldn't care aless what anyone else thinks or does.:teeth:

1) I travel A LOT on business.
2) I typically tip $1-$2 per night.
3) I tip a little more if I leave the room REALLY messy.

We always tip housekeeping, usually $2-4 per day.

For DVC stays, closer to $2, since they only come around every 4th day.

I do not have a maid or a cleaning person at home, but if I did, I would surely give a Christmas bonus. Well, when we go on vacation, we do have a maid/cleaning person, and maybe I can consider the tip part of the Christmas bonus, but whatever it's considered, I do tip. I am grateful to someone who's job it is to clean my bathroom.

We get a weekly free paper and we give a Christmas tip to the person who delivered. Recently I met someone who told me that her son was the person who delivered that paper years ago, and she remembered us because we sent her son the tip. It thrilled him to know that what he did was appreciated. It did make me feel good to hear that.

Well, I said no, but after reading each and every post to this point, I may change my mind. I see valid points on both sides of the issue. I have never tipped prior, I think because I never really thought of it. I know in my previous life as an auto tech, every now and then I would get something from a customer, and it did make me feel good, but I never required it, or expected it for that matter. Recently I taught an adult computer class at the library I teach at, and made a simple comment when one of my students came in late that the last one in buys the pizza. They knew I was kidding, but about a half hour after class was over a Domino's delivery person came in with a Pizza for me and a message of how much this one student enjoyed my class. That made me feel very good, and eager to continue to do an even better job teaching. Thanks all for sharing.
