Does anyone tip their mail carrier and/or their sanitation worker for the holidays?
I was born and raised in the Bronx, NY and it was just something that most people did. Now I live in a New Jersey suburb and it seems like no one does tip.
Am I nuts for tipping them or do most of you tip? If so, how much? I tipped the mail carrier $10 and sanitation $20.

I live in a NJ suburb and we tip the mail man $20. He's a great mailman tho- he hand delivers alot of times and lets the little kids hold packages for him and stuff. He's really nice. If he was just a normal run of the mill mailman, Id still leave him at least $10.
The sanitation workers are not so nice- they leave garbage in the street and ALWAYS stop in front of my house to pack the truck (you know, that loud screeching noise that goes on for about 20 minutes? at 5am every friday morning). So they dont get anything from me. ONe of my neighbors leaves them a case of beer every Christmas and others leave them $5 tips.

I just realized I screwed up. I posted this here by accident. I asked one of the moderators to remove it, as I don't know how. I reposted this subject on the Community Board, as that is where I wanted to post it originally. Sorry about that.

;) When we lived in n.j.{Woodbridge} we tipped the mailman $20. But the trash men made more than me, so no tip there.Besides, the trash men where always changing there route,so you would not be able to figure out who your regular guy was:(

We tip the mailcarrier $10 every christmas. This year we also tipped the substitute carrier... she has been really good about bringing the mail to the door when the weather would be bad, or the stuff wouldn't fit in our mailbox. This is something I learned from my Mom, she tipped everyone!:D Even the UPS driver!

 Your mom must have been extremley generous. The UPS guys make a decent bit of change, salary wise.

Yes, we give our mail man a special gift each Christmas. I wouldn't call it a tip though.

When it was a mail woman, we'd sometimes give her movies passes and restaurant GCs and sometimes Godiva Choc. But now that we have a new mail man, I can start with a clean slate and just give money. I found out from my sister's best friend, whose father was a mail man, that he got LOTS of money at Christmas time and that by far was their favorite gift to receive so that is what I will do from now on.

We gave $10.

we give $10 to the mailman, we leave a bottle of wine for each of the sanitation workers (3).

Our mailman changes from time to time, and living in an apartment, I rarely see them anyways unless they bring a package to the door.

My SO did make a tray of fudge and baked treats for our front office/grounds people. I don't think anyone else here does anything as they couldn't thank us enough and the manager looked like she was going to cry. That's kind of sad if no one else does anything for the employees here as they are really a great crew.
