Do you tip when you go to places like Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts?

No, I do not tip for counter service.

add me to that list. Why would you tip for counter service??? The only time I would tip at Dount shops would be if I sat at the counter and they waited on me and brought me food and filled drinks and I ate it there. If I order and pay at the register no.

I worked at a DD during college (5 am to noon). Our DD was brand new at the time and had some tables for table service. The only time I expected/was given a tip was when I waited on those tables for bkfst and lunch (we had soup, sandwiches, sometimes pizza!). I too draw the line at tipping for every last thing! I don't tip my paper delivery person (adult who delivers by car), I don't tip my postal delivery person (although DH's dad was a mailman and received many tips/gifts over the years), or my UPS man (they are not allowed to receive tips I believe). I do tip my hairdresser about $1 for my kids haircuts and $2 for mine. Just a habit I got into I guess.

I know I will be highly flamed for this next comment, but I rarely tip housekeeping at a hotel. (Donning flame retardant suit now!) I worked as a housekeeper in a hotel while in high school and we were RARELY tipped. They earn at least minimum wage. They are not like waitresses who earn less than minimum. If we stay in a hotel for more than two nights and I feel that they have done an excellent job, I will probably leave a tip. But why should people continually expect to be tipped for doing their job and doing it properly!!! I had an excellent employee help me at Home Depot recently.... should I have tipped him? I don't think so. (But I have sent letters commending employees on their service to their employers in the past.)

Anyhow, sorry for those I have offended..........................P

DId anyone watch Curb Your Enthusiasm on HBO this week? The episode is about how EVERYONE expects a tip! He goes to a hotel and even the repair guy who came in and fixed something expected a tip. He questioned why he should tip someone who was doing their job! I think the practice of tipping has gone overboard! I can see tipping someone who does NOT get paid at least minimum wage, but why do we need to tip someone who gets minimum??? I worked a minimum wage job and I was indeed doing a SERVICE to others, but never got a tip for anything I did. I did not expect one. I was doing my job. I have worked as a hotel maid and only got a tip once. I did not expect one. I was making way more than minimum wage. Tips are for making up what the regular wage does not supply. You make less than minimum wage, you will get a tip!

If I had a big order, or someone did something extra specially nice for me, I would tip. If I have a few cents change and don't feel like digging around in my purse for change, I'll throw it into the tip cup, but I don't feel a need to tip at a counter service place.

Counter type service, no. I only get coffee at one place, and I know they all make about 7 bucks an hour. It's more than my employees get.

The strange thing is that I waitressed in two restaurants that did take out business along with having tables. One paid the people who worked take away as servers, so they were looking for those tips. The other had the host staff handle take away, and they were paid well over minimum wage.

As a result, I tend to tip when getting meals, but not for drinks!

I generally don't tip at places like that.

At our local mall, one snack shop has a tip jar out that says, "TIPS FOR EXTRA-GOOD SERVICE." At least that suggests that you are rewarding above-and-beyond service. The smoothie shop, though, has a tip cup that just says, "HELP ME WITH MY COLLEGE TUITION." For some reason that really bugs me!

You think that is bad, just before Christmas, I was in the local military hospital clinic and they actually had a tip jar that said *Please donate to our christmas party* :earseek:

Sometimes...especially around Christmas or for a big order.

I used to work at DD. I was tipped quite a bit. I never put out a cup. We were not supposed to accept tips and I would tell the customer that but they'd leave it anyway.

I think tipping started at DD because a long time ago, all DD had counter service. We'd wait on them just like a regular waitress would.

I disagree that DD is like a cashier at Walmart. At DD the person is personally making your coffee or sandwich etc...

I did not expect tips when I worked there but they were greatly appreciated especially for very large orders.

I do not like when I see tip cups either!

Yes.....

Everyday DH or I get coffee at Dunkin Donuts for his workers and we tip. Mostly because they are DS's High School Friends or people we know behind the counter.
Every little bit helps.
The order usually comes between 10-20 $$, so a dollar isn't so bad to share.

Of all the things out there that can bug me - this isn't one of them! If my latte comes to $2.65 - I leave them the change from three dollars. I usually won't go digging around in my purse for change, but I can't begrudge a minumum wage earner a little extra. My older DS worked at Noah's Bagels and he said that the tips they received went into a pot and it was divided up according to the number of hours you worked. One time, when the till was short, the manager took the money from the tip jar to balance the day.

I never tip at places like that. And once at a DD drivethru the woman took a $5 dollar bill from me for a 3.25 cost and tossed my change into the tip jar without asking. I sat there waiting. She asked me, did you need something else? I would like my change, I replied. The look on her face was priceless. She had to dig thru the cup to get it. And before I get flamed, I work very hard for my money and that 1.75 would have been one of my kids school lunch money. We live very close to the financial edge and if I accidentaly threw away a dollar (at home) I would look for it.

She actually assumed she deserved a 50%+ tip???? :earseek:

Depending on my mood du jour, I might have had a little chat with a supervisor over that one. Generally I'm not like that, but come on - 50% as a tip for donuts and coffee???

This is something that drives me batty and is a perfect symptom of the "entitlement" mentality. First off, the people at Starbucks make way more than min wage, around here, they make $10-12/hour plus benefits, not too shabby. Secondly, they have gone to the automatic machines, meaning they simply push a button to get the correct amount of esspresso/coffee. So what am I supposed to be tipping for? I worked as a waitress in HS and got by on tips, DH and I tip nicely for good service but I do not leave money at a counter.

It seems these days everyone has a hand out for money, wanting tips for simply doing a job correctly, and I say enough is enough! *Steps off soap box* Hmm, maybe I am a bit OTT after all!
