Do you tip when you go to places like Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts?

More and more I am seeing those tip jars everyplace. I will usually just toss in the coins I get with my change, but it just seems like you HAVE to. And like at Starbucks...who am I exactly tipping..the cashier or the person who makes my drink??

Good question. I hope they split it all up between them. I don't like the idea, it's like asking for it. If they aren't making minimum wage, I could see it,but they aren't wait satff, so why are we being asked to tip? I will say this, for some reason I don't mind dropping a few coins in at DD, but I WON'T do it at Starbucks or the Starbucks consessionaire at Borders.

I do...::yes:: I even tip them at Subway too! I think it has a lot to do with my being a waitress though. :p

Funny this is here. Tonight was the first time I tipped in Starbucks.

Nope, they are making more than a bartender or waitperson does and around here they make at least minium wage so if during the morning rush everyone is dropping in 25 cents or more their pay has to go up about another 4 or 5 bucks an hour and you know they aren't claiming it because they are not tipped employees.

<font color=navy>Nope. I don't tip counter service (unless I'm in a restaurant sitting at the counter). I equate that to the gift wrap section at a department store - I don't tip them either for wrapping my gift - I just pay the price I'm charged.

I have noticed alot of Dunkin Donuts around here have signs now that say "No tipping".

I tip at a local Honey Dew for my coffee every morning!! The girls are all so pleasant and make even a yucky morning nice!!! I guess I tip for the friendly service!! A smile goes a long way!!

This is interesting as my oldest DD works part time at a Dunkin Donuts after school & Sat/Sun.

They DO have to claim tips...the tips can only be counted & given by a manager at our local DD's. It goes right on their pay slips I have seen it.

Most people just drop in their change, but my DD says that if people come in asking for MANY "sandwiches"...like 10 for an office or our local vet, they do tip nicely.

I had actually never thought of it until my DD began working there. Now I like others just leave my change.

I also have noticed that other dunkin donuts have signs that say"no tipping", so I guess this is up to the owner or manager of the store.

No, usually. If you get there at the right time at Starbucks, they are ready to throw out the morning pastries, but will sometimes give them to you for free. Then I tip.

I do usually tip a dollar if I'm picking up take out at a bar.

No. But I don't drink coffee, so very little prep work is involved when I order from those places. I just get doughnuts from doughnut places, and if I go to the Starbucks counter at Barnes and Noble, it's just to get one of their yummy deserts. I'm not going to tip someone to hand me something that's already prepared.

We have seen these signs too and we think it's so funny b/c there are always tip cups on the counter anyway :teeth: . I do tip at Dunkin Donuts but only if we get larger orders and if the orders are correct. I can't tell you how many times the orders are wrong and we only order coffee and bagels or donuts.

I do not tip for counter service anywhere. Jeeze, half the time the local Dunkin Donuts messes up my order.

Don't tip at these places. I just laugh (but not out loud) when I see these "tip cups." Sort of a sad way of begging for money.

Those who do tip at counter service restaurants, do you also tip at Mcdonalds, Burger King, ect. When does the tipping end? I was a waitress for many years. My wages were less than 1/2 of minimum wage. I also reported my tips to be taxed. I do not tip for counter service. TO me counter service is no different than a check out lane at Walmart. Any time you recieve tips you are to report them as income. Dunkin Donuts may pay minimum wage and if employees also get tips, DD will also need to pay taxes for Social Security and workmans comp on the wages from tips. That might be the reason some DD have signs stating not to tip.

As far as I can tell, they aren't attempting to do anything extra or special for me like a wait person might, so NO, I see no reason to tip them.
