Do you Tip Uber?

I know someone who drives for uber and he says people don't normally tip, he's fine with it.
I haven't used uber myself, but my kids(teens) have. The whole reason I like uber is because it's my account, no cash, and they have a ride without worrying about money.

Well in another thread Squirlz said that an uber isn't a taxi so there's that.

Some of you again are going off the premise that Uber drivers aren't compensated well so customers should pick up the slack. If the company doesn't want to pay their drivers a living wage, that is between them. That has absolutely nothing to do with me. I pay the fee that Uber charges on its cashless system and that is that. If Uber wants their drivers to be tipped, they can add a cashless tipping option and people can do it if they wish.
Then there's the whole thing about being a decent human being.

We tip our Uber drivers. I don't mind making sure to have a few dollars on hand to tip them. Our drivers have all been excellent and deserving of a tip.

Have not used uber, but if I did, I would tip. If I didn't tip uber, I'd feel guilty.

Uber drivers are independent contractors and keep 70-80% of the fare. So while tip isn't included per se, this model is different than perhaps a taxi driver where they might have a more fixed rate of pay where they'd be making less than that.

I don't use uber, but my dd has. The appeal to her is that its inexpensive for a broke college girl, and the price is the price you pay. She doesn't tip, but one time forgot something in the car and they did come back to return it. She tipped the driver for that. She is so not a decent human being.

For what it's worth, I did read an article one time where the owner of Uber stated that tips are not expected. That's all I have, have actually never used it, at least not yet.

I used Uber twice while in the city (Philadelphia). I was with friends and the one coordinating told everyone to pull out $1 and we tipped the guy $4 for a 3 minute drive. I've never used it any other time. If I do I'm not tipping. I think tipping is completely out of control. EVERYONE wants a tip for doing their job. Give me a break.

Here is what Uber says about it
  • Do I need to tip?

The Uber app cannot include a tip when billing you for a trip fare. Where available as a vehicle option, uberTAXI is an exception. uberTAXI connects riders with licensed yellow cabs, and includes the option to set a gratuity percentage added to your trip fare. In most cities, Uber is a cashless experience. Tipping is voluntary. Tips are not included in the fare, nor are they expected or required. As a rider, you are not obligated to offer your driver a gratuity in cash. If you decide you would like to tip, your driver is welcome to accept.

Use them several times a week and do not tip. It's a cashless system and the app doesn't include a tip option (Lyft does). My brother drives for Uber and lYft and almost never gets tipped

I have friends who do Lyft part time on the side and make $200 a night. Not bad for some extra cash. And that's without tips.

I use Uber frequently for work trips and for trips at home after having a couple drinks. I never tip. If they had a space in the app to add one I probably would but I agree with pp the whole point and appeal to Uber is not having to have cash or rely on the credit card machine in the cab working (they never have them around here even though they are required to).

I use Uber a LOT- just this month my uber bill is over 200.00 and I always tip. The drivers I talk with say only about 50% of the people tip.

I always find the tipping conversations around Uber so interesting. Americans are so trained that you must tip "or you're not a decent human being" that despite people clamoring to change the system, we can't handle it.

Uber set up their system to be a cashless, no tipping system. Yet about 50% of folks on here think you absolutely should tip your Uber driver.

If you went to one of the no tipping restauarants that are popping up would you tip anyway?

I'll admit if I'm going to the airport and a driver helps haul my bag or there's some other unusual situations I'll tip if I have cash. I don't regularly tip and don't go out of my way to have cash to tip for Uber. Part of the draw of the service is that it can all be done on my phone.

I was recently in Japan and my travel companion kept freaking out. We had a fantastic hotel staff that got us a lot of last minute hard to get reservations, something that would be $100+ as you left, but there it was nothing. I basically had to hold her back from throwing money at the concierge. Same thing happened when we went to a salon and just about everywhere else.

I think Americans tend to have a guilt factor associated with tipping, which means even when companies try to change the system the people are stuck.

I do, I doubt my poor college students do. I think I read something about uber making a change in the app to allow tips to be charged.

No, I never do. I use them mostly for work travel, and always intend to tip if why help me with my baggage, but honestly, none of them ever have.

My boyfriend drives Uber part time and he says most folks don't tip. However, when I use Uber I tip $5. Just my nature...
