Do you tip in this setting?

If I had exceptional service at Ci-Ci's, I'd leave something. I may have left .50 or something after eating if someone refilled a drink, but it isn't really a tipping place (though again, there is no reason NOT to tip if you choose to).

I have been given tiny tips in the past when waiting on tables - it is really deflating. Being a server is a tough job, and I like to make sure I tip well to those who deserve it.

I remember when I worked at Ponderosa for a few months - a lot of guests didn't even know that we worked on tips, that we only were making 2.01 or whatever it was an hour back then.

I'm not sure what the "right" thing to do here was.

We went to a new family restaurant last nite. They have tables and we ate in the restaurant, but we ordered our food at the counter. They gave us our drink cups and we filled them at the self-serve machine. Then we sat down and someone brought our food over when it was ready. That is all the server did for us. I didn't leave a tip. Should I have?

That's kind of a gray area -- not a full-service restaurant, yet not quite fast food either. I'd lean towards $1 per person.

We have a deli (I think it is Jason's Deli)--usually I do tip, last time I forgot cash.

They bring the food to me and they bus tables.

I tip minimally. No idea if they work for tips, but they do a heck of a lot more than McDonald's does.

Usually do 10% in this situation--just a minor thank you (but not an insulting one like leaving a bit of change).

We have a place near us that advertises "affordable excellence". The meals they serve are definitely above fast food, and IMHO, better than you cna get at some sit down places, but......you stand in line to order, get your own drinks, and pick up your food.

I don't leave a tip there.

A little off topic, but does anyone remember when Wendy's restaurants didn't have trash receptacles except for behind a cabinet?

Our Wendy's doesn't have a place to throw away your own trash. Never have understood that one.

I wouldn't tip. If I order my food at a register and they bring it on a tray and plop it tray and all on the table I don't tip. Never have and won't start.

Same here, if I am the one doing all of the work, why would I leave one?

No I don't tip. If they bring me the food I don't tip because it's not that much work and I don't leave a mess when I'm done. I assume the busboys are making more than minimum wage, because I've only ever seen waitresses take tips that are left on the tables.

It's funny because when my one friend and I go Buffalo Wild Wings we would always go to the counter specifically so we didn't have to leave a tip. And the waitresses would always hound us, always asking if we needed anything.

I think places like that should pay them all at least minimum wage since you can't count on the tips.

I know for a fact that the diner that I go to in brooklyn that the waitstaff have to share their tips with the busboys. I think they have to get a third.

The Corner Bakery is set up like this. They are not allowed to accept tips. I'm not sure what would happen to the money if it was left on the table.

I recently ate at a pizza/sub shop where I placed my order at the counter and then a young man brought out my order to the table. I slipped him a couple of dollars and I can tell you I never saw a more grateful reaction from a server ever. He told me that he really appreciated the tip and even came back a second time to thank me again. I have left 20-25% tips at quality restaurants and I have never seen a reaction like that young man's over a $2 tip.

We own a business just as you described. I can tell you that very few people leave tips. It's never been an issue with our staff because it isn't expected, but I can tell you the young men we have work for us generally react the same way when $$ is left at a table. It's amazing how a simple display of gratitude can go a long way

We usually tip when anyone brings our food and cleans the table whether its expected or not. If a person questions whether or not to tip in a certain situation why not err on the side of tipping instead of stiffing?
