Do you tip at Sonic?

i always tip at least $1. i had one instance where i didn't realize i didn't have enough to give an okay tip and i apologized. the lady told me not to worry about it and that most people don't tip.

The only sonic we went to didn't bring a tray. They brought the food out in a bag. We also paid by credit card, and there was no place to leave a tip. I thought we would leave a tip, but then the person never came back, so where would we have left it? Also payment was upfront before food even came. I don't like to leave a tip before I know what the service is like.:confused3

Ours is like this also. They bring it in a bag, and they don't come back. We always prepay by credit card.

I don't see the logic in comparing it to McDonalds. If at Sonic and other drive-in style restaurants they bring the food to your car, and come back to get the tray when you're done that's more than they do at McD's. And if they're wearing skates, even moreso. :) And some of them don't have the speaker system, the car hop comes out to your car when you drive up, so there's an extra trip as well.

It isn't a tipped position.

I can related it to a customer service position where the staff member waits on you hand and food and helps you throughout your shopping experience. But they don't get tipped either.

:confused3

I hardly ever go anyway--but it would never occur to me to tip. And if their staff was getting shortchanged, I'm sure the friendly reminders that a gratuity is appreciated would appear on their menu for folks who may not be aware that the food fetchers are on a tipped income.:thumbsup2

If they bring it to the car, yes, a bit. If I go through the drive through, no.

Being in New England and having the workers on roller skates made it worth the tip. The funniest thing is we didn't know there was a drive-thru until we had our food (we were on our way to Co Co Key and were late). My kids got a big laugh out of pulling in, ordering, waiting and then driving away only to see the drive-thru!

If I go through the drive through, no. If we order at the speaker and they bring the food and everything out we give them a couple of bucks.

So excited that CT is going to have a Sonic soon. Thankfully, it won't be to close to my house. :rotfl:

I generally don't. Sonic was my first job, and unless they've changed something the "car-hops" (ppl. that bring you your food,) get paid just as much as everyone else. Honestly, I really prefer just going through the drive-thru part (seems faster to me,) but the one closest to us doesn't have one.

If they bring me my food, absolutely. It doesn't matter to me how much somebody gets paid. Not my business.

At the drive-through window, no. And I've never gotten out of my car there, but I suppose if I did, I wouldn't tip at the walk-up window either

I tip if they bring the food to my car, but not if I use the drive thru.

happily single.... can you give directions to sonic? my kids have been bugging me to take them but I don't know where it is.

I always tipped when I went to sonic in Florida when they brought it to the car.

thanks
Kim

I always tip when I'm paying cash but aound here when they added the debit/credit machines they don't give you the option of whether to tip or not. So if I'm charging and have no cash- no tip.

Us, too. I rarely eat there but it is always worth a few extra dollars to make the day a little better for our car hop.

She went to the one in Peabody MA (yes, people have driven lonnnnnnng) distances - it's the first one in New England). It apparently broke records for store-opening sales - I could be entirely wrong about the actual numbers, but over a million dollars in 58 days?

Do you know anything at all about the area? Where are you, and I'll see what I can do to give you directions? Apparently, the next one in New England is going in Connecticut. That might be more convenient for you

The one coming to CT is in Wallingford. Unfortunately, not to close to the RI border.
