Do you tip at "Chilis to Go" type places?

Here's the difference. The person bringing that out to your car is making little more than TWO DOLLARS an hour. Sorry, but this subject gets me going. They also have to pay taxes on 7% of their sales, by law. Which means, they're paying YOU to bring that out to your car. Though it may only be a couple cents, it still stinks.

I'm just curious how this is any different than what they do at Burger King or McDonalds? I'm sorry but I'm not going to tip anybody who is just bringing my order to me.

I'm still not going to give a tip for someone bringing me my order. If I eat in....I tip 20% unless the service is awful. I am not going to tip someone for just bringing my food in a bag to my car. If the waitresses and waiters are put in that bad of a position by not getting a tip by the "to go" orders...then they should take that up with the employer.

I guess i would consider it kinda like going to Sonic. I always tip a little bit if they bring it out.

If you don't tip because all they're doing is carrying something, let me ask you this - what about vacations? Do you tip bellhops? Valets? How about mousekeeping?
I'm pretty sure they're getting paid more than a couple bucks an hour and all they do is carry stuff, when you think about it. Furthermore, these are the people that touch your food, careful about becoming a regular. ;)

Sure wouldn't want YOU as a waitress...sheesh!

Wow, aren't you a dear.

I was a very good waitress, thank you. People that never tipped and expected the world from me just got bonuses. :flower: You'd be surprised what happens to rude people's food when nobody's watching. It's not just me, sweetie.

So am I to understand that if you don't think you're getting a tip, you would do something nasty to a persons food? And you think thats okay? We have a 10 page debate on here because a mousekeeper used a guests bathroom and what a vile and disgusting act that is but you essentially admit to spitting in food, not handling it properly or doing other acts that would be illegal if the health department found out, and no one says a word? Amazing...or should that be Brilliant?

Thank you miss lovely, but like I said, I tip when I eat OUT. You are hardly worth getting banned for so I won't be getting in a pissing match with you today. ;)

So if I order a pizza and go to pick it up, I'm supposed to tip? Um, no. I tip (very well) for sit down service, but not for carryout. Sorry.

Its a sad but true thing....I worked for a pizza place and the people that didn't tip the delivery driver did NOT get the best food...cant say we ever spit in it or anything (well not that I know of!) but I know a few that would empty salt or pepper shakers into it...We had a list of non tipping addresses so you always knew when that order came in you were going to drive over there for nothing...in fact it would cost YOU money in gas to bring them food for no tip.

Yes, I do tip them 10%. I figure they do almost as much as they would if I were there, minus clearing the table and refilling my drink. As others have said, they don't make minimum wage. If I can't afford a 3 or 4 dollar tip, then maybe I shouldn't be eating out.
No I would not tip at McD's, but I wouldn't tip them if I ate inside McD's either.
Doesn't seem like a balanced comparison.

How can you call yourself a good waitress if you are giving people's food "bonuses".

I've never ordered curb side service - doubt I will after this post.

Hey, you started it, sugar lumps. I wasn't insinuating that you don't tip when you eat out. But since we're calling each other such lovable names, let's just forget about fighting over something so stupid. Truce?
To be totally honest with you, I've never done anything terrible to anyone's food. So people can stop attacking me now. Ok, I stirred someone's drink with my finger once. You would have too, trust me. He was a rotten old fart. That being said, I have seen some seriously nasty things happen in restaurants in my lifetime. :crazy2: There are some sick people out there. The one that sticks out in my head the most was one that my husband witnessed in his fast food days. He caught someone wiping his armpits with hamburger buns.
I have to put that behind me to eat out sometimes, I swear. I do go out of my way to be nice to my server though. I know how scary people are.

I agree. In NYC, we generally do NOT tip for to go orders or we'd be tipping in every store on every block we travel to.

Sorry I don't agree with the people here who are making it OUR responsibility to pay them. When we order take out food, it is a convenience provided by the RESTAURANT. The price on the menu does NOT simply reflect the price of the food. SERVICE is included in that price. It's not like they let customers walk back to the chef, order off the menus & bag their own food & get condiments & utensils. :crowded:

Taking orders & bagging food is part of the job. Give me a break! If employees have a problem with it, they need to take it up with management BEFORE being hired. If you don't like the responsiblitities involved for what you are paid for, change it, or work somewhere else, until it does change & become customary to be paid more, or to be tipped - as is customary for bellhops, etc.

I, too have worked in the restaurant industry. There are some places I simply wouldn't work for. Maybe that's part of the problem. I don't come from an attitude of scarcity & accept any job ,groveling for the crumbs SOME employers pay. One of my cousins owns a staffing company providing waiters for the most exclusive, 5 star catering companies & parties, like major movie premieres & celebrity weddings, here in NYC. The times I work for her, when we are tipped, it is for extraordinary work & service. :groom:

Really? I worked as a server for years and never saw anyone do something to someone's food.

As far as the OP, I usually tip anywhere from 2-4 dollars or so. The people I knew who worked carside take out said on average they get about 2 bucks a car and they're fine with it because it's not hard work.

if they come to the car just a couple of dollars if i go into a place to pick it up most of the time no

if we ordered pizza and it was delivered we tip about 3-5 dollars depending on how much the order was

Oh My! I have to say that i worked exclusively in the food industry from age 16-20. Then I worked on and off as a second job there from about 20-30 as needed to suppliment my career. Luckily that is no longer necessary. I have never seen anyone spit in food, wipe their arm pits with food, or anything disgusting. I have never, ever done anything that was inappropriate. Not to say food in a restaurant is the cleanest, but never seen anything deliberate. I have probably worked in 10 restaurants in my life. With that said we did know the regulars that didn't tip, and they didn't get anything extra above minimum service. I can't believe that anyone would think that the behavior suggested here was ok.

I agree with you!

I will reiterate, the tip is APPRECIATED because of the aforementioned reasons. For those of you who don't want to tip, don't tip. Good grief.

BTW- I have NEVER done anything to anyone's food/drink when I waited tables or bartended, but I have seen others do it.

nope - no tips for to go's here....the main Applebee's I frequent had a special to go window where the customer has to come in and pick up. I am sorry if a server has to take 3 min to box up an order and it so takes away from the tables they are waiting on. The hostess usually is the one taking the order and this AB has special workers simply for the to go window.
