Do you think this would put my DD at any risk?

I have been looking for a job for awhile now. We live in a small city so the type of job I'm looking for is few & far between (part time office work). In the paper last night there was a listing for part time front office in a family practice doctor's office. Something like that would be perfect except my DD is immunosuppressed. I would imagine if I worked there I would be exposed to a lot of sick people, especially in the winter, and I would be worried about possibly getting sick myself and bringing something contagious into the house where she could get it. Of course she goes to school and is exposed to a lot of germs daily I would imagine. Last year I was worried sick she would get the flu that people were dying from. I don't want to do anything that could harm her. I probably wouldn't get the job anyway, especially if they need someone right away, since I would have to tell them I have two vacations coming up in the next little bit. Just wanted to get some feedback on whether you think I should just rule this one out.

well I don't know a lot about that disease, but here's my perspective:

1. she already goes to public school (talk about germs)

2. you would be working the front office not handling patients

3. you'll have a doctor right at your fingertips if you feel your daughter is sick

Tough call, Liz, from here. I think what you say about Laura being at school and all though is no different that other exposures we are all subjected to. Maybe ask her doctor/s what thoughts they have on it. In any case, my best, and continued good wishes for Laura's health, she sure has been through a lot. She remains in my prayers.

If she's going to school, she's probably pretty much exposed to anything you're going to be exposed at an MD's office already. Couple that with the fact thet you are going to be working the front desk and not directly contacting patients, and I would say that you'd probably be OK.

I would practice good hand washing techniques, and also keep a bottle of the anti-bacterial stuyff handy, but I don't think overall the type of exposure you'd have will be a huge problem.

I work at a MD's office and have worked in them for 10+ yrs. Most everything I catch is from DS (11). Usually he gets a cold first, then I come down w/ it 2-3 days later. So I honestly think I get more germs from him going to school, than me going to work.

Ask her pediatrician to put your mind at ease. I would think public school would be more germy than your job.

I agree with Kallison, ask her pediatrician. My opinion, which isn't worth much when it comes to this is that there are germs and sick people everywhere. If she goes to school she is being exposed to tons and tons. I would think it would be okay but better to be safe than sorry. Good Luck!
