Do you think this is weird or too cheap?

It has to do with family of five's response. "Sorry too cheap! You can't afford the team if you need to cut costs on food, hotel, or travel."

That is silly. It is about priorities. It is like saying that if you can't afford to stay and eat at disney you can't afford to go to disney.

We took a three week cross country trip a couple of years ago. Sometimes we stayed where we could cook :) It was better for us and saved us money. Best trip ever.

Not a sports mom. Hate sports but if it is what trips your trigger have at it and enjoy the process as you like.

We spent several years with our daughter on a competitive gymnastic team that traveled all over to compete. For many months a year, we spent several weekends each month on the road. Your talking hotels, food, gas.....they add up QUICKLY! We got to the point that there were some trips that the families of these girls would get together and come up with meals to bring that could go into the mini fridges and be taken put and reheated in the microwaves. You find out that you can be very creative after awhile! Don't let your friend's opinion put a damper on what you want to do!

I can't imagine wanting to go back to the hotel and cook after spending all day in competition. The travel is part of the expense of participating in these activities and is a factor to consider when signing up. We had some fun times when we organized tailgates for our kids teams but not every sponsoring group allows you to do it. For my family, it would not be enjoyable to have to cook when getting back to the hotel. Snacks and beverages yes, entire meals, no.

I agree that most people would not want to go back and cook after a day of competition. It is not a matter of "want to" though, it is a matter of "need to."

Very true, nobody "needs to" play on these teams, many "want to." It is all about priorities.

need to, want to...that's irrelevent. I think the OP is smart to save money where she can.

We are taking long weekend next month for a cultural event. We are staying in a cabin and taking our own food. I can cook for three of us for what it costs one to eat out. Why spend money on mediocre food when you can bring good stuff from home.

OP, take your food and enjoy your trip. Let the 'too cheap' sayers spend THEIR money eating out.

I think it is a good idea to travel with healthy snacks/food. You can keep to your eating plan and save a few $$. Win-win. Have fun and good luck!:thumbsup2

I agree that it's a great idea to bring your own food. My daughters are gymnasts and we travel for competition often. It gets expensive and eating out isn't always that healthy. I pack and bring my own food when ever possible. I just lost 100 pounds and I want to be in control of what food I eat. So bring my own makes sense from an economical and health standpoint. Don't let anyone make you feel bad for doing what you think is best.
