Do you think that "Hell---oooo" is rude?

One expression that seems to have infiltrated the language and modern culture is that expression "HELLOOOOOoo", which is short for "wake up, pay attention, note the obvious" etc. I have heard it in conversation, on the radio and lately on news shows. I find it incredibly irritating, as if the speaker is absolved from being rude and saying, "hey are you stupid?" Does it bother anyone else?

I hate it as well. My kids are really good at saying that to each other. I nip it in the bud every chance I get.

I work part time at an elementary school and I have heard teachers say it to students as well. Maybe kids are thinking it's acceptable because it is so commonplace.

recently my coworkers and i have taken up saying
"bing-bong!"

basically the same connotation.

I don't see a problem "hello?" per se...however i don't think a teacher should be saying that or "duh" to a young child.

in late high school/college - totally different I think...but when a child is young...no.

Hello, duh and whatEVER... I think they sound so obnoxious at times, especially when said by someone who is notoriously unexperienced in life.

It's not what you say, but how you say it. I think it is rude and condescending.

guilty as charged. i say that when describing idiots to my friends all the time. i also have been known to use "duh". :p

Yes I think it's rude. A girl in my class and I were talking about that. We are in a training class at work and the two trainers say this all the time to get our attention. What ever happened to Excuse me????

I have to say that I really don't have a problem with it (and I'm usually sensitive to swearing and other mean words). Maybe because it's so common? I don't know but it doesn't bother me.

To me, it's more like "wake up and listen" not so much "duh".

I don't like it - but I don't hate it as much as I hate "puh-leeze"! In general, when people say something that is meant to be said pleasantly and say it sarcastically I'm turned off.

its better than HEY MORON!!!!! or PAY ATTENTION STUPID... doesnt bother me.

LOL!! No kidding! I say it, but it's usually in response to someone saying or doing something not-smart (kind of like "what were you thinking"). I don't say it to get someone's attention though.
