I am getting some award june 5th. some underclassman award at my high school. for one i dont even know what it is for. what do know is that i dont want to go. i dont want to walk up on that stage to get it in front of more than five people and i dont even know how many people will be there. i wasnt even going to school that day but know i have to wake up early to go get this award. I am really really really shy, and get nervous easly and shake. like last year we had an awards thing in front of my class i had known since kindergarden and it was just those 60 kids i have known my whole life and i was shaking so bad i was nervous (other way around). my parents are making me go and i told them i would not smile once. anybody else like even understand this even a little bit?

You should go. I bet all they will do is say the award, call you up, you shake hands and then sit back down. It really isn't anything to be nervous for. Nobody will laugh or be rude, and they would clap when they are finished presenting the award. Go!

You have either earned or been selected for this award, and it would be rude not to go and receive it.

Don't be embarassed - you deserve it. When they call your name, take a deep breath and keep your head up and walk with good posture as you go to the stage. Once on stage, take the award with your left hand and shake the award-giver's hand with your right (there is often a line of three people who will shake your hand and wish you congratulations. Be sure and make eye contact and smile as you say "thank you" to every person (do not look down at your hand as you shake it). Keep your head held high as you walk off the stage.

Believe me - awards ceremonies are long and it is likely that no one will remember you walking across the stage as you receive your award.

If you feel yourself shaking, take a deep breath and think of something happy or funny - whatever it takes to calm you down.

They want you to feel special, not stressed out. Everyone there is rooting for you. :cheer2:

I understand you :)
My school has this really stupid prize evening thing and I've managed to end up as best in my grade for maths, english and history for the three years I've been there. Getting on the stage in front of 300 people is not my kind of scene. I dread it. It's actually alright though, people are less likely to notice you if you're not bright red and shaking xD

My school does awards as well. I hate receiving anything at all.

Last night I sat through two hours of awards to get one for a class I was never overly fond of-- Art II. I don't know what art this teacher was looking at because there is no way I was the best in the class.

But, I hear ya with the nervousness. One of my friends hates being in front of crowds so much that she actually got physically sick ones.

But I think you should at least make the effort to go. Yours is probably much smaller than mine was (the one where my friend got sick was in front of 1000+ people). Plus, if you have been notified in advance of the ceremony and know you will be receiving an award, it is generally bad etiquitte to not show up without a valid reason (ie: swine flu, funeral, appendicitis, death, etc;).

In 6th grade we got awards. I wore a disney shirt every day to school. Guess what? I won "best dressed" I think it was some sort of joke or something to all of the popular girls.

I was in the same situation as you. If I went I would have had to wait in a line in front of a huge crowd and wait until my name was called. I would then have to walk by myself up on stage and shake 5000000 hands then go sit. I decided I didn't want to go and explained to my mom I just don't want to go. I picked up the award the next day in the guidance office.

I wouldn't go. My reasoning for not going was because I didn't like my school and the people it was run by. But whatever the reason, if you don't enjoy basking in your own glory don't go. You can pick it up and be proud of yourself the next day. No big deal.
