In attemept to block kids from seeing pornography, I think a .porn extension makes a lot of sense. Parents could block the extension at home.

But, what about the people who own these sites already? Should they just transfer them from .com to .porn? Is it fair to them? Do you care if thse people's business gets affected?

Any other ideas?

I think it should work better than what we have now, and I think a HUGE cash penalty should be imposed on anybody who violates the .porn / .com policy, if indeed there ever was such a policy.

BTW, I am aware that kids will find a way, but at least we should do what we can, IMO.

I like the idea, but it won't work. Porn is a multi-million dollar enterprise. And oddly enough, many people try to watch it while at work. (We had a few where I worked). With a .porn suffix, it would be way too easy to detect and that is one thing the porn enterprise would not comply to. MHO.

There's been debate about this for years, over a .xxx domain.

Some are against it because it "legitimizes" porn. I don't buy that.

I just think it won't work.

- Simply creating a .xxx top level domain won't help. Playboy could register playboy.xxx but there's nothing to make them give up playboy.com.

- Forcing them to give up playboy.com or move their porn to playboy.xxx can't realistically be enforced. Who will enforce it? The US government? What about sites hosted in foreign countries? Some other non-government body? Any of them would require that body to start examining content of web sites - no one really wants that. And how many millions and millions of web sites are there to examine? How many people will they need to employ to do it? Even if citizens submit porn sites to the body, they'll still need to verify it. And once they examine a site, how many times to they go back to it to review it?

- What about services like AOL or Comcast.net where users can create their own web sites, but they are accessed under the service's domain. For example, with Comcast, I can create a personal site and it gets a name like home.comcast.net/~myname. If I put porn on there, does that drive all of Comcast into the .xxx or .porn domain, since I don't have a domain name?

Unfortunately, there are no easy answers. There are content filters out there that do an OK job. I volunteer as a network admin at my kids Catholic school and we use SurfPatrol that catches a lot of sites. There are others, including a free (but difficult to set up) product called Dan's Guardian that works well.

All they'd have to do is have their website hosted offshore where it isn't subject to regulation. Won't work.

I think parents just need to monitor their children's internet usage. My son can only access the net on my computer, not on his.....I plan to keep it that way.

I don't think the .porn thing would work anyways, for reasons already stated.

I agree that it won't work and as much as I don't like such websites, I don't really want to see a bunch of regulation on the Internet. I like that it's still a place of relative freedom, all too rare nowadays.

I totally agree with you. I am amazed...absolutely astonished at how many parents refuse to moniter their child's Internet usage. Most of my daughter's friends use the Internet with no supervision at all and have for years. Their parents are at work and they are filling the hours online talking to strangers. They go on myspace.com, Instant Messenger services, and chatrooms meeting strangers and handing out personal information left and right. Frankly, I don't care if my kid stumbles across porn; that is the very least of my concerns. I'm far, far more worried about her getting into a chatroom and making a "friend" that turns out to be a stalker or child molester!
