Mornin' everyone. I've got a notebook where I'm keeping info I've learned off this great DIS Boards and here's one idea I haven't seen yet so I'd like to contribute this thought. I got an email yesterday, you know the type, the one that goes round and round with the ol' "pass it on" at the end. The email suggests to take the room key of hotels where you're staying because the key has all kinds of personal info embedded in it that you might not want "out there". We're going to be using the all in one card to include the charge to the room feature and of course, when I saw that suggestion in the email I thought, omgoodness, I'm taking my key when I leave and bring it home...another souvenir! Do y'all take the key home when you leave the hotel?

The Key to your room is a plastic card, like a credit card. It is also your Resort ID card. So, everyone who is staying in the room will get a card. If you want to take advantage of the Extra Magic Hours, you have to show proof that you are staying in a disney resort, by showing your resort ID card. They all have each person's name on them.

You do not have to give the card back to them. It is yours to keep. The locks on the doors are electronic, and each card becomes programmed with the information to open the door. so after you leave, your card will not work with the door anymore, the card of the person coming in there after you will then be programmed to open that door.

it is a nice souvenir!

good luck and enjoy your trip! :wizard:

I always bring mine home, not really for the reason you suggested, but because they are so cute!

That email is an urban legend: http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/hotelkey.asp

At WDW, the keys are personalized with each guest's name, so the hotels cannot recycle them. The privileges they give you are good until midnight on checkout day, so it always makes sense to keep them at least that long. They are nice for scrapbooks, too.

Of course, if you have non-expiring park admission encoded on them, as we do, you may be keeping them for years.

Thanks y'all and NotUrsula...Leave it up to me to tell a story. ;)

accroding to the info I get on check in, we're welcome to keep the keys as a souvenier---which we do...never gave a thought to some of the extraneous reasons---some of which sound a little over the top by someone who feels compelled to advise others :smooth:

Supposing the story was true, how would people get the information off the card? and since Disney programs the card only to work for a certain number of days, after the last day has passed, then they wouldn’t be able to use it anymore...

The last key card I received from my trip in April had a beautiful pic of the castle on it; great for scrapbooking!!!!

I keep ours to put in my disney scrapbook. I love them! I always love to see what's on them. I do the same with our tickets!

We kept ours--It still has 5 days of Park tickets and 6 Water Parks and more uses (non-expiring)!!! No scrapbooking--it is locked in the safe!

Me too! They look great in there (room keys and park tix)!

Well they have my name so it's not like they are going to reuse it.

As far as the info on it . I really don't think it's any more then code. The computer then links that code to the info stored in the computer.By the time someone would get their hands on it I think that info would be blocked out as it's closed upon checkout.

I just throw them in something when packing for checkout and eventully they end up in a desk drawer at home.
Last week I was looking for my AP and noticed that there were stacks of old room keys. Seemed like a lot more than I remember until I made my reservation for December and the CM asked to confirm while reading my history at WDW that I had more than 31 stays since 2000. Sort of freaked out a bit but then the number sounded close after some quick math.
Someday a wall will be covered in WDW room keys and I can tell everyone here is the island in the Caribbean I could have owned.
Hey its what I like and funny thing I go to Vegas more often than WDW.
