Do you "swiffer" or too expensive?

Thank you so much to everyone who suggested water with a 1/4 c of vinegar for my hardwood floors! I am definitely going to try that :thumbsup2

Did they say why?? I thought Murphy's Oil Soap was good to use? That is what I use on my wood floors, so now I am nervous.

They said it leaves a build-up and in some cases can damage the finish. I'm guessing that eventually you lose the glossy shine.

I actually DO use the Murphy's Oil Soap on my floors, but I dilute a capful to an entire bucket of water. I also really wring my mop out until it is just damp. I think I got the oil soap thing from my mom and grandmas...they all had the really old wood that just had years of polish/wax on them and/or marble (entryways/bathrooms) and the oil soap always worked wonderfully on them.

Had my 40 year old oak floors recently refinished and the floor guys said just about anything (really diluted) except Murphy's is okay. Over time it dries floors because it is partly soap. Old floors were not polyurethaned and couldn't be wet, so the murphy's oil may have worked. Old marble wasn't sealed either. Who knows?

It is fine to get sealed (newly finished, polyurethaned) wood floors pretty wet, just no standing puddles. Swiffers work great on wood and so does vinegar water. Other cleaners seem to build up. :confused3

I heard the wet swiffers can make your pets sick if they step in the wet and lick it off there paws. Due to this im a mop and sink kinda girl (who uses a bucket? thats for being sick in)

Urban legend; not true. Type it in the search bar at snopes.com (a great sight!) Swiffer wet is MOSTLY water!

I like my swiffer, but I use old towels instead of the swiffer pads. Works well, costs less.

Too expensive.... when vinegar and water in warm water do just as good a job, if not better.

Wood floors here. I sweep to get the big stuff and then go over it with the dry swiffer twice. Then I use a cloth pad that the owner of the flooring store gave me as a housewarming present (we bought all the flooring from him). I use solution I still buy from the flooring store. I use the wet swiffer for quick cleanups from spills. I used the regular wet swiffer a lot, but once they change the pads, it just doesn't seem to work as well getting the floor clean. Although I do still use it on the tile floors in the bathrooms. Swiffer is great for me, as I have really bad allergies to dust and cleaning solutions.

I love my swiffer and would never go back. I buy when on sale and in the large value paks

I had my husband use a wrench to twist the lid off my swiffer bottle, I now refill it with water and white vinegar. I use some microfiber towels from the automotive department in Walmart 8pack for $5 cut in half, they stick to my swiffer velcro-and are washable. Very cheap and works great. Also have a swiffer vac that I use the same microfiber towels on. They are thin so I just pull them up around and stick them in the slots. Works great too. I wash all of them once a week in the laundry that I also use white vinegar in as the fabric softener. I can get a HUGE jug--like 2 gallon at Costco for about 2.50.

What kind of floors do you have? I actually have wood laminate. Wondering if the vinegar would work on them.

i use the generic swiffer pads to get all the dust and dog hair up- then i use a steam mop- LOVE it.
especially in the bathroom-

We have all hardwood and tile through out our house. No carpet at all. For me it's too expensive to buy all the swifer stuff. I use old wash cloths instead of the pads and I make my own solution of vinegar and water to clean with. All I had to do is buy the swifer mop.

Did it end up twisting off? Cuz I tried so hard to get that stinking bottle open so I could do the same and reuse iit too.
I will have to have my DH try to get it off.

I second the microfibre clothes. They are amazing and will clean just about everything with no or little cleaning product.:cool1:

Instead of taking the cap off the swiffer bottle - I could not get it off either - I had dh drill a whole in the top (that is the part that is the bottom, but is facing up when the bottle is on the mop - does that make sense?;) ) He put a cap in it, so it won't slop out, though I wouldn't tip it upside down. It's easy to refill with vinigar and water or whatever you prefer to use.:thumbsup2

Yes I have laminate floors, like pergo, and I find vinegar works great, only a small amount though with water.

THe CAP, yes I could not get it off either but had read that you could. Told my DH what it said and he used and adjustable wrench/pliers and was able to twist it off. Now it screws and unscrews with no problem. I gave my DH an extra kiss (although I wouldn't have had too because it lowered the grocery bill a little more. I have been able to drop our spending by about $10 a week by not having to purchase so many detergents and cleaners.

I use those microfiber cloths for everything, mopping, dusting, cleaning spider webs, drying etc....

happy swiffering

Our whole house is hardwood except the upstairs bath. That's 4,100 sq. ft. of floor to wash.

I have an old Swiffer (the sort you poke the dry sheets on for dusting) that I use with a bunch of old cloth diapers (prefold thick sort). I wet the diaper with a solution of Polycare (from flooring place; suggested by the installer), wring it out, and wrap it on the end of the Swiffer.

I use 2-3 diapers per room.

I have to say thank you to the poster who talked about the shark steam mop at Sam's!! I had been considering one for a little bit as the wet swiffer on our laminate floors tended to leave a residue and make our feet black :scared: ...it was like it was attracting more dirt after I mopped. I bought the shark steam mop with the steam bottle thing today. AMAZING! I'm totally in love with a mop! My kitchen and living room floors look fantastic and they don't feel sticky. Thanks again!!
