We just dumped our last land line (and associated DSL service). We hooked up internet via cable. Wasn't hard to do. The ONLY calls we got on the land line were sales calls (don't need them) and my MIL (who only has a cell phone herself....or the irony of her insisting on calling the land line...we programmed her cell so she now calls our cell numbers).

I have both and don't see getting rid of my landline anytime soon. I don't like talking on my cell phone, I don't hear as well on it.

Same here. Especially since the 3 watt analog phones went away and the 6-10ths of a watt digital phones became standard, audio quality sucks.

My cell phone is my emergency phone for when I am away from my landline at work or my landline at home. I guess that's why I still call it my car phone, not a cell phone.

I've gotten to the point where I actually prefer texting, unless it's super-involved. I hate talking on the phone, but I know sometimes it's required for business, so I bite the bullet.

I just don't see the need to call someone just to say something like:
"Hey, we're gonna go see X-Men at Alamo Drafthouse at 8PM tomorrow night - wanna join us?"

And a simple response:
"Sure thing! See ya then!" or "We'd love to, but can't make it, have fun!"

I hate the obligatory chit-chat that seems required for a phone call even if it's just for a simple thing that should take 30 seconds.

I answered yes, and rarely use it. Mainly because we use our cells more.
But, it still gets used much more than "rarely." I have no intention of giving it up anytime soon.

I have one, but never use it. I don't even have the number memorized. I only got it to appease my overly concerned mother. I have some health problems and she wanted me to get it for emergency purposes. If you call 911 from a cell phone and are unable, for whatever reason, to give them your address, it can be hard for them to locate you quickly. But if you call from a landline, they can see your address.

We still have a landline only because it makes our internet/cable bundle cheaper. We don't have any extras on it though, no voice mail or call waiting. We hardly ever use it.

We have a landline through Ooma. No monthly fee for us. DH has a smartphone and mainly uses it for business. He has a google voice number that he gives out and it will ring the home number and his cell. Although I have a cellphone, I just use it for emergencies or texting DH if I am running late or if he has to get the kids. Mine is through freedompop so I don't pay a monthly fee. The phone itself is not that great. The battery doesn't last very long sitting idle and the reception is lousy when talking to someone. I can hear them, but they can't hear me and vice versa. I also have a work cellphone which my company pays for. I will never get rid of the landline.

I have a land line. Yep, it is bundled with my cable and internet. Since most of my family is still located in PA or another state, my land line has unlimited long distance. My smart phone has unlimited text and data, but not minutes. So unless I call my mom, I use the cordless. Which reminds me I need to call her, now that she's out of the hospital...

I'm the Luddite with just a landline, but that's not 100% entirely true. Both DH and I have tracfones that stay in our vehicles. We use them for emergencies only, although I will occasionally call him at home from my tracfone if I notice that it's recycle day and I know he's forgotten, for example. I don't know my cell number or DH's. I also use it to "buzz" DD at her dorm when I am there to pick her up- I just speed dial her cell number and let it ring twice, so she knows I am there. It costs us less than $100 a year for both DH's and my tracfone.

I will admit, we don't use the landline very much. I am not a "chat on the phone" kind of girl and often use the handset display or TV to screen calls; if I don't recognize the number, I don't answer. DH uses it to talk to his mom and dad, and I talk to my sister about once a month. Mostly, we use the landline to call in our takeout pizza order! We just really aren't phone people, either land or cell lines!

have both and when at home I use the landline. I cannot multi-task as well with my cell phone. I keep cutting people off when I try to talk with it on my shoulder. I am also a 4-H volunteer. The office gives out my home number if they have people call me with questions. I do not want then to give out my cell number.

That's my problem. I will talk on the phone but I need to be doing something else too. And I can't hold the cell on my shoulder. If someone calls me on the cell, I usually call them back on the landline.

We have both. The land line is mostly solicitations with a few reminders about appointments or prescriptions, but it's the only one that friends call for some reason. They have our cell numbers -- never use 'em. I think they're Luddites. For outgoing calls, we both use our cell phones because it doesn't cost us anything.

We still have a landline and that's what I use when I'm home as I find it much easier to hear on the landline. We'll probably never get rid of it.

I rarely call anyone on my cell but I do text a lot (not while driving though!). I'm not the type to chat on my cell when I'm out shopping or whatever, I'd rather not be bothered. :rotfl:

Only my immediate family and two friends have my cell number. If anyone else wants to reach me, they can call me at home.

Maybe they just like to be able to hear you. I hate calling my sister on her cell phone. There's always an awkward delay, making conversation difficult, and it's often hard to hear her clearly- and we won't talk about dropped calls! Maybe they call you on your landline because they want to be able to talk to you, uninterrupted!

You know, I referred to myself as a Luddite earlier, but I'm not sure if that's true. I really don't enjoy talking on the phone- never have- and don't feel the need for someone to be able to contact me immediately, regardless of the situation. I don't WANT to have a phone in my pocket and always be accessible. DD20 has both my home and work numbers programmed in her phone so she can contact me. (actually, that worries me a bit- what if she needs to contact me but has no signal? She couldn't call from a landline because she doesn't know my number- it's all on speed-dial.) Given that I don't like to talk on the phone in the first place, and the cost of cell service in this area ($50 a month for service plus $40 for each phone), I will stick with my landline in the house and "emergency only" tracfone in the car!

We are cell phones only.

Finally got rid of the landline 3 months or so ago, and do not miss it at all. The only calls we ever received on it were stupid telemarketing calls and my Mom. DH used to have to have it for work, as he did a lot of faxing, but he no longer has to do that so we finally got rid of it.

I'm not much of a "phone person" and generally just text, rarely talk on it. And I'm not one to carry it around the house with me. I usually have it on the kitchen counter or here by my desk, and just put it in my purse when I leave the house. DH has his with him all the time, as he uses it a lot every day for work.

I couldn't vote as there was no "other." :rolleyes1
We have a landline that dh and I use more than our cellphones (for phone calls although I do text and dh does not).
My kids all have Smartphones so if they use the landline, it's to call one of us because we aren't answering our cellphones (either by text or phone call).

Can't vote no option for us. I have 2 land lines and probably use them more than my cell. My Cell use primarily for texting. I cannot stand talking on it and only talk on it when I am not home. When I am home I use the landline both for regular use and as my main phone number and fax number as I also work from home. Dh does not have a call and refuses to get one, all three kids have them though and we encourage them to use them as I cannot stand their friends calling constantly on the landline.

I recently switched to a digital land line, but I still have to have it because of my alarm system. Unless I wanted to upgrade that whole system to cellular, I have to stick with a land line, which is pretty cheap with my new internet package. It does have limited minutes like a cell plan though.
