Do you see any flaws for 7 month mark?

Just making sure I'm not looking at this the wrong way.

Hold current reservation at AKV for Thanksgiving week. We want to change to VWL at the 7 month mark, which is Monday. VWL is open at this point but I know it is a harder resort to book for holidays. Because of this I would like to try to change the ressie on line instead of on the phone to gain the one hour advantage.

We used our 2014 points for our AKV Jambo reservation. I know I need to cancel AKV then reserve VWL because I don't have left over 2014 points to just make the second reservation (the disadvantage of doing this online). This puts us at a risk of having NO reservation if someone else grabs VWL before I do. However, I know that Kidani would be open, we just really wanted to stay at Jambo this trip if we needed to stay at AKV.

So, the next part of my plan is where I want to see if I'm missing anything that would be a negative. Could I just sign in right at 7:00 a.m. on Monday and book VWL with my 2015 points. Then cancel AKV which used 2014 points. Bank 2014 points to 2015 points? I'm assuming this scenario only works if I'm sure to use or rent out my points which I would have now banked. The next glitch I want to confirm...there may be a chance I will need surgery before we go. If we would get VWL with 2015 points and I would need to cancel, I would HAVE to use or rent out those points before the end of the 2014 use year because they were borrowed.

Am I missing anything? Is there a flaw in this plan that I am overlooking? Is there a reason this would not work and I should just call MS Monday morning and lose the hour advantage?

I would just try to cancel online and book VWL. You would likely be able to get your AKV reservation back if it didn't work. I wouldn't mess with your 2015 points.

If you book with your 2015 points they will stay in this use year if you have to cancel and would have to be used by the end of it. Your 2014 points which you then put into 2015 would have to be used that year and could not be pulled back into this year or banked for 2016 if you did not go next year.

I agree, and would not borrow. I would take my chances and willing to live with the consequences.

Or pay for the trip insurance when you book WL with your 2015 points... not exactly sure if it reimburses your points or pays you for it.

When I was discussing the reimbursement options with MS one day while she was pushing me to buy the travelex travel insurance, she told me that if you have to cancel, you are only reimbursed for your maintenance fees on the points you used.

She may have been wrong, but that reimbursement is paltry if she wasn't :(

OP, book online. I wouldn't risk my 2015 points by borrowing them them into 2014 and then having to use my 2014 points in 2015 or lose them.

That's correct - you get your dues money reimbursed. $5 or $6 a point isn't worth it unless you are at the end of your use year and they would be lost.

As to buying trip insurance, the above is correct in that you do not get any recovery for the points used but instead for the maintenance fees applicable and that only if you are unable to make another trip with the points used.

As to advice given above that you will likely get back AKV if you cancel on line and then cannot get VWL, do not follow that advice. AKV Jambo savanna and standard views, other than possibly 1BRs, are usually gone for Thanksgiving and potentially day before and after at 7 months out (since you are an AKV owner you can chek now to see if Thanksginving is already booked). Moreover, even Kidani studios (if that is the size room you are looking for) can be gone at 7 months out for Thanksgiving, and thus if you follow the pattern of cancelling AKV on-line and then trying to get VWL, you could end up with no reservation.

Personally, I would do the phone call at 9 and see what happens. I would not risk borrowing VWL if you have a risk of having to cancel the trip. Nevertheless, if you decide to go that route, you can, obviously, do that VWL reservation now and not wait until 7 months out.

Thanks for all your thoughts. It sounds like everyone agrees to not mess with the 2015 points.

Obviously it's different every year but since BLT opened I have no trouble getting VWL at 7 months. I got it last year for Dec 26-jan 6... Busiest time of the year with no issue at all. VCG seems to make it even easier. Good luck... That's my wife's favorite resort
