you (or your parents) pulling into a gas station, the attendant would come up to your window and ask how much? After he'd start the pump, he'd open the hood, take out a slightly dirty white rag from his back pants pocket, pull out the oil stick, wipe it on the cloth, put it back in & pull it out again and let you (or Dad) know if your oil was low. Then he would grab a squeegee and wash & dry your windshield and back window. After that was done, he'd tell you how much the gas costs, wish you a good day & off you'd go.

Do you remember "Where's the beef?" "I can't believe I ate the whole thing." "Thatsa speecy, spicy meatball."

When we were teens, we would go to the gas station with cutest guys. You could ask for them to put in one dollars worth and they didn't laugh at you. Gas was 33 cents a gallon at the time.

Yes I remember the gas station- even the gas shortage in the 70's when they rationed how much gas you could get.

How about "I've fallen and can't get up"?? OMG that was soo funny-- not so funny as an emergency dispatcher trying to send out the FD for someone who has fallen and couldn't get up! I had all to do from cracking up during the dispatch!

Yes, I remember a time where it was unheard of (and I don't think even allowed) to pump your own gas. I remember "where's the beef" also! But the other two don't really stand out in my memory.....

Yes I remember the shortage in the 70's. Heaven forbid we ran out, our gas gauge was broken and I was pregnant.:scared1:

In NJ we are not allowed by law to pump our own gas...one other state also has that law (maybe Oregon?) And our gas prices are cheaper than neighboring NY.
The place I go regularly for gas also cleans my windshield! :)

I live in New Jersey where we still don't pump our own gas. Unfortunately, they no longer squeegee our windows so now the only time they get clean is when it rains.

I also live in NJ the place I go for gas is a family owned station, they clean your windows, ask if you want your oil checked and even have a full service garage:goodvibes. I've been going there for years, they know they have to be one step ahead of the big guys (Wawa, Costco etc) to stay alive, I really like getting gas there, plus if the car needs to be fixed I know I can trust them:goodvibes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ug75diEyiA0 Wheres the beef!

I can't believe I ate the whole thing - Believe it! Believe it! Cant find the 70's video.

So yeah, I remember the gas thing. We had license plate odds and evens days to get gas during the shortage. I wasn't driving yet. My gas station still cleans my back and front window. Nobody else does.

Funny thread! :)

How about:
Dinah Shore commercials with her singing "See the USA in your Chevrolet"

When there was no cable TV and you had 4 channels to watch, the local CBS, ABC, NBC and PBS stations.

When Cable TV was called Pay TV and folks said people would never pay for receiving TV channels.

Seeing a first run episode of "The Dick Van **** Show".

Watching Miss Pat's Playroom and Mister Rogers, a decade before Sesame Street or the Electric Company were even thought of.

When that new hamburger place opened in town, McDonalds....and you could get a burger, shake and fries and get change back from your dollar.

Getting a Bell Beefer at Taco Bell.

Every Kentucky Fried Chicken had fried livers, and there was only the original recipe.

Watching Ed Sullivan when Topo Gigio was on.

Watching "Friday night at the Circus" while eating popcorn at home.

Drinking Fizzies, which turned your tongue different colors, and those colors turned up again when you went number 2.

When Cyclomates were the only artificial sweetner you could buy.

When soda came in glass bottles than you returned to the store for a refund.

Going with your dad in September to see the new cars at the local dealership. (Bonus points if you remember going to see that new Mustang at the Ford dealer in 1964.)

When Toyotas and Datsuns were considered crappy cars.

When you stood up in the back of your parents car while they drove so you could see better...and nobody had seatbelts in their car let alone airbags.

The first time you flew in a huge commerical plane....and it had propellers.

Milk was milk, there was no non-fat, 1% or 2%. And the milkman came to your house once a week and delivered the milk in a glass bottle that you returned. If you weren't home he'd come in and put it in your fridge because he had a key to your house.

The garbage man actually got out of his truck, went into your back yard, got your trash can, carried it to the truck, dumped it, and then carried it back into your backyard.

Making Jiffy Pop popcorn on the stove.

Having Tonka Toys.....and trying to destroy them...only to discover they were indestructable.

Before there were Legos, there were Lincoln Logs.

Your dad drank Olympia, or Schlitz, or Pabts Blue Ribbon Beer.

You'd come home from school and watch Lassie, or Dark Shadows, or reruns of I Love Lucy.

School ran from the day after labor day, until the middle of June, and you got Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and the Day after, 2 weeks at Christmas, Washington's Birthday, Lincoln's birthday and Memorial day off, but there were no days off for teacher prep, and no minium days.

Little League Baseball started the last week of May, you took a week off for All Stars in July, played until the first week of August, then everyone with kids in Little League took their summer vacation the last three weeks of August.

Nobody played soccer.

There were two Professional football leagues, the NFL and the AFL.

When WDW had fruit drinks in plastic container's shaped like that fruit:confused3

I remember not having to worry about which side of the pump to pull up to - because the gas cap was in the back, behind the license plate.

I don't remember Miss Pat but maybe that was a regional show? For us on the East coast, at least here in Philly, we had Sally Starr, Chief Halftown and Gene London.

I remember Lassie & the others but I also remember, way, way back when, the Loretta Young show when I was just a wee one.:rotfl:

For other's in my area, remember Dr. Shock & Bubbles hosting Saturday night horror movies?

Yep, I do, though I was too young to drive.

Remember "Pretty sneaky, Sis" and "Barbara, you up? Barbara, you up?...I'm up now." Oh, and another favorite, when Cleopatra says, "Not enough warmth."

Another Jersey girl here and our place squeegees!! Well there is one nice guy that does it(and yes I tip!)

I do remember being a little girl and having to get up real early to go sit in a gas line with my mother. (in the 70's)

What are these quotes from? They don't sound familiar.

They are all commercials. The first one was for Connect Four (I think), the second for Nyquil and the third for, I believe, Hallmark.

I also remember our old Fury; it got, what? four or five miles per gallon? :) I also remember bouncing all over the back seat when my father hit all the potholes on the road, which, despite how bad the roads are now, were so much worse back then. Gosh. Thinking about it now, if we got into an accident I'd have gone right through the windshield. There were no seat belts in the back, and folks weren't worried about highway safety as much back then. How many times did my father get lost? We'd visit local "sites", like Cooperstown, Howe Caverns, Springfield, etc. But maps were expensive, and so he'd try to get us there by following signs, which were much less adequate back then regardless.

Yes, and then my grandmother would tip the attendant a quarter!
