Do you remember these stores?

For those on the West coast:

Zody's
Gemco
Fedco

Speaking of Picway Shoes, we used to have a store in Pennsylvania called Pic-a-shoe.

Whatever happened to Rickels? It was like a Home Depot/Lowes/Hechingers home improvement store.

I remember Kinney shoes, as well as Thom McCann shoes. My favorite was Baker's shoes, we don't have them down here in VA, but I know there are still a few in PA.

Massachusetts people might remember some of these. . .

Jordan Marsh: Geee, I still miss that store.

Remicks: I think there was only one and that was in Quincy Square. It was owned by actress Lee Remick's family.

Going way back... Kennedy's. A small store that sold eggs, milk, cheese, etc.

Sterns. There was one in Boston when I was a kid. I remember my grandmother taking me there and I thought it was so cool cause they had an elevator.

Oh, and the store that said it was the home of unkle Eff or Eef. LOL! Can't remember the name of the store at the moment but there was one in Boston and also in Quincy. My DH just remembered... Raymonds!!!

Fun thread! :teeth:

Blondie, "Wild Pair"!!! I bought some of the craziest high heel boots there in the 80s.

I must be getting old if I worked in some of the stores that are on this list, i.e John Wannamaker, Abraham & Strauss (A&S).

I remember Korvettes from when I was little, also Alexanders (the Walmart of its time for us in the Bronx) but here are some others:

B. Altmans
Jamesway
Caldors(boy do I miss our Caldors)
Bakers shoes

BTW, they sell Buster Brown kids shoes in either kmart or walmart.

How about Thom McAnn? We used to buy all our school shoes there!

I remember a lot of these! I worked at Phar-Mor for about 3 years during and after high school.....I also worked for Sam's Club as a manager for 7 years (they bought out Pace)...boy, these are bringing back some memories! The only thing I remember about Merry Go Round is that the music was always loud, and my mom wouldn't let me shop there!:p

Blondie- Thom Mcann shoes reminds me of a funny story: A friend of my sister's went out on her prom night and decided to try and order a cocktail. Instead of asking for a Tom Collins she ordered a Thom Mcann  :teeth: I think the waiter figured out pretty quickly she was underage!

I remember quite a few of these also
How about:
Bambergers (now Macy's)
Tiny Tots
2 Guys (from Harrison)
Channel (kinda home depot, lowes.....)

Wow it is great to remember all these stores. What a shame they are gone. Being originally from southern CT, I remember the first Caldors when Cal and Doris Bennett first opened it in Norwalk. My aunt knew Cal Bennett. It was a lot different than the cheap store it became under May Company and later. It was originally a store that was better than a discount store but not as fancy as a department store. Kind of like Target is today. It was able to serve places that could not support a full department store but did need some type of mid-priced retail outlet. Sadly the Bennetts got old, sold out and under the new management the stores lost their focus. What a shame.

In CT we also had:

D.M. Reads (loved their original store in downtown Bridgeport, it had elevator operators)
Howlands (vague memory of original Bridgeport store, lots of memories of the Fairfield store)
Levitz' Department Store (not the furniture store) in downtown Bridgeport
G. Fox (loved their downtown Hartford Store)
Sage Allen (loved their downtown Hartford Store too)
Edward Malley's in New Haven
H.L. Greens
Any Woolworths (loved their cafeterias)
The Fairfield Store
Henry's Mens Shop

Also remember The Outlet Company in downtown Providence RI

My DW and I recently were in NYC and did some shopping. It was great to go to stores where the staff actually what the store had in stock, knew their products and helped you find what you were looking for. I had forgotten what service really meant. Today, the stores around here are terrible. You can never find anyone to help you. If you do they do no know anything about the products they sell or what they have in stock. DW just called Sports Authority to see if they had an item and after being on hold for 10 minutes got someone who had no idea what they had or didn't have. LOL Jay

In the Carolina's we had:

Miller and Rhoades (dept store)
Pic-n-pay shoes
Fast Fares
Kings (like Kmart)
Iveys

Boy do I have some memories in those stores!

Back in the Gold Circle days we also had Rinks.

I don't think I've ever heard of any of these stores. Are they a Virginia kind of thing?

Grocery stores from our area that are gone:
Loblaws
Krogers
A&P
Festival Foods
IGA
Foodland

We had G.C. Murphys 5 & 10
Carlisles
Lynn's
Mason's
and Sears used to be Sears and Roebucks

My first job was at G.C. Murphy's!

Anyone in NJ remember Hahne's Department Stores? I used to be a buyer in the Boys Dept. I was also a manager of the Kid's Dept. in Rockaway Mall. I remember the weekend I had to get dressed up as a stuffed dog - I think it was called "Le Mutt?"

there are A&P's & IGA's in certain areas of NY and they have Krogers in Tennessee. Does anyone remember Master's? There also use to be a fast food place called Carols. I really miss Caldor's also.

I'm thinking.. I'm thinking...

In the South, does anyone else remember TG&Y?

Lots of Kroger's here in Indiana - IGA's are popular in southern Alberta - I think even Indy has one or two IGA's.

I totally remember Goldblatt's! That is where I told a bald woman (I assume going through chemo treatments) that she looked like one of the mannequins. (I was 4 or 5 so I don't feel as bad) ;) I remember exactly where it was too. Wowzer.

I remember 2 Guys, Woolworth's and Grant's. I remember receiving a Gideon's pocket Bible outside of the Woolworth store. They were just giving them away outside the store.

Anyone ever have a Jamesway in the neighborhood?

I remember Bamberger's!!!!!!

What about Hess?

How about Deb Shop when it was called (I think) the "Deb-Joy Shop" or something like that.
