Wow it is great to remember all these stores. What a shame they are gone. Being originally from southern CT, I remember the first Caldors when Cal and Doris Bennett first opened it in Norwalk. My aunt knew Cal Bennett. It was a lot different than the cheap store it became under May Company and later. It was originally a store that was better than a discount store but not as fancy as a department store. Kind of like Target is today. It was able to serve places that could not support a full department store but did need some type of mid-priced retail outlet. Sadly the Bennetts got old, sold out and under the new management the stores lost their focus. What a shame.
In CT we also had:
D.M. Reads (loved their original store in downtown Bridgeport, it had elevator operators)
Howlands (vague memory of original Bridgeport store, lots of memories of the Fairfield store)
Levitz' Department Store (not the furniture store) in downtown Bridgeport
G. Fox (loved their downtown Hartford Store)
Sage Allen (loved their downtown Hartford Store too)
Edward Malley's in New Haven
H.L. Greens
Any Woolworths (loved their cafeterias)
The Fairfield Store
Henry's Mens Shop
Also remember The Outlet Company in downtown Providence RI
My DW and I recently were in NYC and did some shopping. It was great to go to stores where the staff actually what the store had in stock, knew their products and helped you find what you were looking for. I had forgotten what service really meant. Today, the stores around here are terrible. You can never find anyone to help you. If you do they do no know anything about the products they sell or what they have in stock. DW just called Sports Authority to see if they had an item and after being on hold for 10 minutes got someone who had no idea what they had or didn't have. LOL Jay
