Do you remember the milk man?

Yup!
And the Soda Man!
And the News delivery boy!
And when Doctors made House Calls!
And the Grocery delivery Boy!
And the Pharmacy delivered!
And the Butcher Delivery Boy!
And the Diaper Service!
And the Insurance Man coming to get payments each Month!
I even rember the Parish Priest use to stop by all the houses just to check in!
Heck I remember my Mom running up a Tab at the corner grocery store, and then she pay up on pay day! Not to mention Pop running up a Tab at the corner Bar...and paying up on Pay day.:rotfl2:

Things were much more 'Customer Courtesy' back in the day.:thumbsup2

Up until about six weeks ago I was delivering for a pharmacy. :) Mostly SNFs and adult family homes, but a few private homes on my route as well.

I'd forgotten about the pop man. I remember my mom's friends had Pop Shoppe pop (pretty sure that was the name) delivered when I was a little kid. I thought that was so cool, especially since their kids (and me, when I was there) were actually allowed to drink it. The only pop in our house growing up was 7up, and it was mixer. Not for kids.

How things have changed and Im only mid 50s. Besides the milkman I remember milk machines selling 1/2 gallon cartons since stores had fewer hours. Remember when most stores were closed on Sunday and open only 1 evening a week? Yes there were the Fuller brush men, the knife shapening guys, the fruit peddlers and the junk men. How about the smaller local grocery that would have a kid that worked both in the store & delivered your groceries? I did that one for 7 yrs. I can still remember a couple of dogs that I had to jump over fences. It was a slower time & I think a better time. You saw your family more even if you were working overtime.

I hated it especially on Sunday mornings. Those Sunday papers had to be delivered before daylight. And I am not a morning person.

I remember the egg man. He used to deliver a few dozen each time. I thought it was so weird.

I HATED SUNDAY...those papers were HUGE, and I had about 75 customers!:scared1: And I am no morning person either.

I hated colleting on Fridays too...jeeeeez the excuses people came up with for not paying their 90 cent weekly bill!!!!!!!:headache: Then they give you a dollar & wait for change.....I NEVER had change!:rolleyes1

I remember the milk man and the fuller brush man.

:lmao: & Electrolux Salesman (i loved when they threw real dirt on Moms floor), encyclopedia Salesman....& when Avon Ladies REALLY did do Ding Dong!:rotfl:

I grew up on a farm, and we had a milk man who delivered milk to the house every week, in those big jugs with plastic handles.

One time we had a puppy - a collie - who was outside when the milk man arrived. She ran up to him barking, and he swung the milk jug that he was carrying at her. I don't know if he actually hit her or not, but from that day on she was TERRIFIED of milk jugs. If you opened the fridge, and she saw the milk jug inside, she'd go nuts, barking and trying to attack it. When we wanted a drink, we had to carefully open the fridge door, blocking her view of the milk jug with our bodies and pouring out our drinks. We spent many years treating the fridge like it contained a bomb because she never got over that fear.

We had a milkman until I was about 9 years old. I remember always eyeing the one brown bottle on the porch as once in a while my mother would order me chocolate milk!! It was the best!!!:thumbsup2

We also had a laundry man that came by each week to pick my Dad's shirts etc. He would deliver them the next week and pick up more. He drove a brown van almost like the UPS man now.

And when Doctors made House Calls!
My primary doctor will still do this.

And the Grocery delivery Boy!

I have a young cousin who does just this. He works for a small time general store and that is his job to take people their orders

And the Pharmacy delivered!

We still have those too!

And the Insurance Man coming to get payments each Month!

I remember this also!

I even rember the Parish Priest use to stop by all the houses just to check in!

This still happens here also.

There are still places here where you can run a tab, or pay them next week. When I was a teenager, my dad had a gas tab for us. We would all go fill up and at the end of the month, my dad would go pay the bill.

Ok where are You????? I havent seen these in years!:worried:
But I have Drive In Movies near me!:cool1:

Recently I was visiting a friend who lives in a very small town. We went to get gas, and not only did the gas station owner come out and pump the gas for us, when he was done he said "okay, I'll put that on your tab" and we drove away! She said that's very common there.

I'm in North Alabama.

The closes drive in is about 80 miles round trip. I would love to have one closer. Our's closed in the early 80s. I always said if I won the lottery, I would open one back up.

I also have my primary doctor's cell and home phone numbers in case we need her after hours.

One of the Birmingham news channels did a special on local doctor's who made house calls. It seems that it's something coming back around.

I have this also. We are now down too just two stations that do this, that I know of. But it use to be most stations did this up until a few years ago. I LOVE my gas station!! They will come out pump my gas, wash my wind shield, check my oil, and if I have time check my pressure in my tires. They have also put wipers on my truck and give doggie treats to my pup.

I have a milkman and get my milk delivered. :) Once a week, milk in glass bottles. He drops them off in the "milk box". I also get my eggs, butter, cheese from him.

A little OT, but we also use to have a charlies chips man that would deliver potato chips!

Ooo, I remember him. Loved those chips. My mom still has one of the old cans.

My parents had this one guy who would stop by the house every couple of weeks to sell them stuff out of his station wagon--DH and I were talking about stuff like this the other night and for the life of me I can't remember what this man was called.

Hopefully someone out there will be able to tell me!!!

As for the milkman--well my best friend in kindergarten, her dad was the milk man and he drove around in a yellowish colored truck--I think it was for Hood but I'm not 100% sure--this was back in Mass in the 70's.

But I have Drive In Movies near me!

We have one near us too! I love taking my kids there. They've been emailing me with the movies they are showing for a month or so now, since they opened for the season. Must be about time to stick the kids and their blankets in the van and go!
