I was told by a travel agent that now I need a copy of my marriage license to show that I was married and had my name changed on my birth certificate. Is this really true??

I've only been asked for this once...and it wasn't when trying to get on a cruise (which we've done 4 times without being asked for my marriage certificate). It was only at Philadelphia airport's Delta counter when I was trying to get my flight tickets for the Bahamas in August '03. I didn't have it, but after a while they let it go and gave us our flight anyway. From that point on, I've always brought it with me. BUT, I do not have a Passport -- I think that would solve that problem. Gotta get one of those!

Hey Judy.....

Really...I can't imagine that you would need a ML.....if you think of it...most every married woman will obviously have a different name than what is on their birth certificate....

I have never, ever been asked to provide a ML when travelling, in the U.S. or out!!!

Hey MJ, good to talk to you. I was just told by my cruise specialist from Costco, that they are required. I asked her since when, I went last year and didn't need it and she said only recently. I haven't called Disney Directly and asked them, but just wondered. Maybe I will break down and get a passport then, just didn't want to spend the $85.00 or what ever it costs, since I really don't travel outside of the USA at all.

What cruise are you guys doing....the one from CA?....what week???

MJ

I have been on six Disney cruises and one Carnival cruise and have never been asked for a ML....and my birth certificate, of course, has my maiden name on it. My ID, drivers license, has both my maiden name and married name. I've never heard of anyone being asked for a ML......

Most cruise lines (CCL, RCCL, PRINCESS) now require a copy of your marriage certificate as well as a passport and drivers license, if you do not have a passport.

As of September 2004, DCL did not require one. I just checked w/ them they still claim they don't. It's all about security. It is possible that some who have cruised recently were not asked for one but if you are and you don't have one, it can seriously ruin your vacation.

I would bring one anyway. It's better to have too much ID than not enough. That's my motto.

I would rather take it with you and not need it, than to be asked for it and not have it. If it is easily accessible just put it with the rest of the docs you are taking with you.

Costs for a passport will go up ($12.00) effective next Tuesday, March 8.

The exact same thing happened at Philly airport when I went to the Bahamas as well (it's my horror story!) And yes, get a passport if you don't want to carry the marriage cert. around. I won't go into my situation because it's ridiculously long, but I stood there and said, "Who would have their married name on their birth certificate anyway?" and the woman at the gate said I needed it because I had a typo in my driver's license. Long story short, I didn't fly that day. Now I have a passport. Good luck! Melissa

I was on the wonder on 2-6 also and they didnt ask for my ML either. I have been on 2 other cruises not DCL, and wasnt asked for it then either. good luck!!

Get a passport and quit worrying. :flower: I love my passport.

Edited to add: When we took our first DCL cruise it was our honeymoon cruise. I seem to recall the CM looking at my marriage license because the reservation was married name, but all of my documentation was still maiden name.

In the 21 years dh and I have been married I have never been asked for my ML -- not even on my honeymoon. HTH

Get a passport. You'll need it to travel out of the US in a few years anyway, so might as well get it now.

Although I highly agree with getting a passport, I do not see why you shouldn't copy your marriage certificate and just keep it with your cruise docs or other papers. We stuffed all of our important papers (even the passports and Marriage Certificate) into the box our cruise docs came in. No biggie... :umbrella:

Now, I wonder do you have to have a marriage license to get a passport?? With all the after 911, does anyone know that?

If you have a passport with your maiden name, you can send it in to the State Dept. with your ML, and they will amend your passport on a page in the back. They will type something to the effect, "On (date) this passport was amended to reflect the holder's name as _____." They will return the amended passport and your ML to you.

Always make sure everything matches.

If married women made the reservation in their full name, Mary Smith Jones, instead of just Mary Jones, wouldn't indicate for sure that the bc and the married lady were one in the same?
