Do You Read/Buy Newspapers?

I subscribe to The Boston Globe on my kindle and DH subscribes to The Wall Street Journal on his. We read the local Conway paper and The Manchester Union Leader hardcopy when in NH. We get the local Vero Beach paper hardcopy on Sunday when in Florida, but I enjoy the Orlando paper daily when visiting WDW.

Union members at The Boston Globe narrowly rejected steep cuts in their pay and benefits, but now face even deeper reductions . . .

I think everyone agrees that this is a big shame for all those who's livelihoods are going to be adversely affected, but at this point, it seems very ill-advised to turn down an eight-point-something percent cut given that it was clear that the alternatives were either a twenty-something percent cut or losing your job entirely. When does making a point end and concern for your family begin?

I am a bit perplexed about why the NYT has delayed the 60 day notification to the state; they can always retract it if it turns out they want to continue operating. It seems to me that they're trying very hard to make a go of this, and for the union to insinuate that they're the ones acting in good faith while the company isn't is ridiculous. The numbers don't lie: There is every reason to believe that newspapers suck as investments these days, and so severe cost-cutting is not only appropriate but necessary in order for the operation to contribute to the enterprise instead of a being a drain on it. It isn't good faith to insist that the rest of the company subsidize your operations, so I don't get where the union comes off insinuating something like that.

I think the NYT is probably getting close to the end of its rope, and will probably give the 60 days notice by the end of next week.

I do buy newspapers...

Saving jobs & writers are both good things IMO.

We get the Charlotte paper daily, USA Today M-F, and our little local paper once a week.

We get two papers delivered every day. The Chicago Tribune and the Northwest Herald, which is the local paper. I read them both.

If I could read the teeny tiny print I sure would. I miss having my coffee and reading the paper in the moring. I am jealous of people that can see to read their papers.
