Do You Prefer to Drive or Be a Passenger?

Driver. I get motion sickness if I’m not driving plus I don’t trust anyone else lol. The only time I’m a passenger is when I’m teaching one of my kids how to drive and it’s miserable, so DH does the majority of that.

I always drive. Some of our trips are long (17 hours straight to St Augustine) so I have to let my husband drive sometimes during that. But I tend to get motion sick and also have a hard time settling so I prefer driving.

Drive. Necessity since I'm by myself now but even before I was quite comfortable with it. On long trips the routine is pretty nailed in these days and I find it rather relaxing.

I drive. We've been literally from coast to coast and border to border over the past 10 years. From Key West to Seattle, and from New Hampshire to San Diego. From Canada to Mexico along the west coast and from Miami to Massachusetts on the east coast.

I hate to drive so if there is any one else with me who can, I'll gladly be the passenger. I will switch off on long trips if it's my car but I don't like to drive anyone else's car. I will not drive hubby's truck, big ole Ram dually that he bought to pull our fifth wheel. I've driven it maybe twice around his small south Georgia home town but no way am I driving it where we live and no way I'm driving it pulling the fifth wheel. I think part of it is I didn't learn to drive until I was 21 so have never been comfortable with it.

For the most part I'd rather be the passenger when my husband is driving long distance especially because I get to nap lol but we take turns driving, sometimes he might drive longer than me sometimes it's equal.

I would prefer to drive or have my husband drive if we're with the in-laws but generally mother-in-law wants to drive and father-law-does as well. Mother-in-law is more the verbal aggressive driver being annoyed at every driver cursing at them. Father-in-law is a speed demon tailgater which often gives me motion sickness. When we've gone to the Lake,l step-father-in-law is the one that drives if we're in the same car (these days I'd prefer two cars if we could) because he is the one to know best on towing the boat.

I’ll do both. However, if it bummer to bummer traffic, can’t stand to drive or be a passenger.

My sister uses the GPS on her phone. I can't tell you how many times I've heard "recalculating" whenever she takes a wrong turn. Myself, I have a really lousy sense of direction. If someone is trying to get me to a place I've never been, Google Maps would not help-I am hopeless.
I'm not a directional person but left/right is how I work. Google maps is great for us non-directional people plus they've gotten even more improved with updates, mine now gives me landmarks like turn at X place or shows on the map at the corner is a CVS for example

Depends on who would be driving if it was not me, as well as how long the trip is. If my husband were driving I'd be happy to be the passenger. If my mom would be the one driving I'd prefer to drive. If it's a long trip I would not want to drive. As I have gotten older (in my 50s) I tend to get sleepy on long car rides. 🙄

I used to be completely fine doing either, but teaching my DS to drive** broke something in me. :scared:I am just not comfortable riding anymore, even though DH is a fine driver. I end up having to literally bite my tongue to keep from nagging him, which he understandably hates. In town I try to read my phone or focus my attention on something else; on road trips I sleep as much as possible.

**In fairness, DS is a fine driver also and never had any sort of mishap during his learning years. Some weird switch in me just flipped somehow and I became hyper-vigilant in a way that I haven't been able to shake. :(

When I was evacuating for Milton, my navigation system wouldn’t recalculate. There were a couple of times I got off onto a side road I was familiar with and it kept telling me to make a U-turn for miles until I got to a spot where I could manually reset it. That and the slow traffic alerts were annoying.

As to the topic at hand, I prefer to be the passenger, even though it means taking motion sickness meds. However, it all depends on who the vehicle belongs to. I don’t allow anyone else to drive my car, and I prefer not to drive anyone else’s, so that usually determines who drives.

My experience has been the same. While my car built-in GPS works great most of the time, I still have occasions where it tries to send you off into the weeds with bad directions. I find it helpful to have a general idea of the routes you will take when driving a long distance. If it provides obviously incorrect info, I know enough to ignore it and eventually it seems to catch back up when it 'recalculates'. If it gets totally mixed up, I usually exit out of the map function and try to reload the destination. Seems like a bad computer program at times and like my home PC, occasionally you have to reboot it to get it to work correctly.
