Do you prefer to live in a city or a small town? Have you done both?

Small towns are notorious for being gossip mills, but I live in a city large enough that people often identify with their neighborhoods instead of as residents of the city. We are a small city so I can imagine that this must be even more true in large cities.

What I loved about living in the city: The overall feel, stores being open at any hour, can still get a small town feeling in your neighborhood, culture, always something to do

What I love about living in a small town: Having our own home and yard, being able to contribute to making my town better, not that far from the city, less traffic, more relaxed, less expensive.

Biggest disadvantages are:

city - sometimes too fast paced, not being able to park your car, hardly saw stars or grass in NYC (unless I made a trip to the park)

small town - progress takes forever, must be content with self so as to not let gossip and pettiness get to you

I live on one of the islands near Savannah.(Is that a big town?). I wouldn't ever want to live in a big city..I like grass, and I don't like traffic.

I live in a small town and love it. i know that everyone knows everyone and that sometimes that's not a good idea :lmao: but it is just big enough that not everyone knows everyone and their business but small enough that I don't feel like I can't let my kids out and play or go to their friends houses and walk to school and such. :goodvibes

I like big cities (everyone minds their own business)
I like small towns (everyone cares about his/her neighbor)

I cannot stand the suburbs-all the nastiness of cities and all the small mindedness of small towns.

I live in a small town (OK large compaired to some). It is about 6000 people.

I grew up in a larger town of about 25,000-30,000.

I hate the small town because I live out in the sticks, not in town. Everything is catered to the people who live in town. I would love a side walk but don't have one. We are lucky when they come & plow our road once early am & then again at about 3:15 (yes I time them).

We have no stores out here so I have to drive the 7 min into town to go to the town store, school, small town shops, etc... Or drive about 15 min to the larger grocery store.

But I have more land then they do in town. Our houses aren't right on top of one another (OK some sub divisions I have seen pictures of are far worse). My neighbors are far enough away that if we are outside I don't need to say hi if I don't want to.

I live on a dead end off of another dead end so my kids can ride their bikes on the road with out me being worried that there are fast cars.

Now living in the town I grew up in (Trumbull, CT). I loved it & wished I still lived there. It was a great town.

It was big but not too big. You still knew people. There were town pools & even a pool & planeterium in one of the schools.

The grocery store was right up the road from me & the mall was right down the road.

Everything was easy to get to.

OK so I don't have a bad thing to say about my home town. I miss it & wish I was still living there.

I have never lived in a city so I would prefer to live in a small town vs a city.

OMG, let me move back to a city before I die. I've been living in small towns for 21 of the last 25 years and I HATE it.

I like small towns (everyone cares about his/her neighbor)
NOT true at all. People only care about the people they already know. New to town? You're invisible and always will be.

Neither.
I prefer the country.

I want neither. Give me the wide open space of the country.

Same here! :thumbsup2

Yes, it can be a little inconvenient (the nearest McDonald's is about 15 miles away, the nearest grocery store 6 or 7 miles away), but I still wouldn't trade it. The only neighbor I can even see is my uncle's house across the pasture. I like sitting in the backyard and watching our horses graze where it's quiet and very peaceful (unless, of course, my Chihuahua tries to boss my Lab around :rolleyes1 :rotfl2: ).

I grew up in a small town (2800) and now live in the city (500,000). After sitting on our local small town school board and pissing off rabid wrestling parents  , I much prefer the city. :rolleyes1

My high school years were spent in a small town in Northern Wisconsin and I hated it. Hated. It.

I love cities but I would not want to live downtown. I want a house. I want a yard. I want to see stars at night. My ideal is to be on the outskirts of a big city. As long as I am no more than an hour away from a few concert venues and no more than 10 miles from Target, I'm good. :cloud9:

Ahhh...I just moved from a small town in New England to a big city in CA and I absolutely LOVE this city we are in.........LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Soooo much to see and do. I have have been here since July 1st and have not even made the slightest dent in places to go, things to do and people to see. Naaa...in my small town back East that was one huge bore. AND I lived there 15 years. Not to mention they can keep all their snow, ice, cold, wind, rain, humidity.....life in the OC is fabulous. :sunny:

I still own my small town home in MA and I can always go home for a "small town" fix if need be..............but NAAA!! :lmao:

I do MISS my SOX and my PATS and my CELTS. ;)

I love big cities and I currently live in a small city now (about 225,000 people). Madison used to be too small for me, but I have grown to love it over the years. I live about a mile from our state capital so I feel like I am always part of the city. I don't think I would enjoy living in a small town and I don't care for the suburbs. I know for a fact that I would go completely bonkers in the county because of the isolation.

I've lived in big cities (Washington, DC) and very small towns (rural Wisconsin 1,000 people.) I have to say, I didn't like either extreme. I like a mid-sized town. I now live in a town of about 150,000 people. It's big enough to have the amenities, (a good gym, decent shopping, a couple of museums, a symphony, a playhouse, theatres, etc.), but small enough that the commute is easy, traffic is light, I can always find somewhere to park, etc.

If I HAD to choose between big city/small town, though, I'd go back to small town in a heartbeat. The big city was a headache and a half.

I've done both, plus the in-between of a fairly dense suburb. I REALLY miss the city. I miss all-night stores, concerts, sporting events, and nightlife not being a major hassle to get to, bookstores and libraries and coffeeshops, traffic sounds at night... There's not much I don't like about living in the city. I'm not real fond of being a liberal night owl in a guns-and-God conservative town where even Taco Bell closes at 9pm. But here we stay, because you can't beat my town for a safe, quiet place to raise children. Tons of parks, excellent schools, and that "everybody knows everybody" atmosphere. Still, I'm looking forward to the day when we can move back to Detroit.
