Do you plan on going out on Thanksgiving for shopping?

I always worked on Black Friday, Banks don't get that day off, so I could never take advantage of deals since I refuse to wake up at 2am and drag all day at work till 5pm. When the stores opened at 8pm-9pm Thursday worked out since my kids (who are small) went to bed at 8pm so I would put them to bed and head out while DH stayed home and watched pumpkin chunkin. I got some great deals. Last year our kitchen flooded and couldn't go out because of the plumber. So I shopped online last year and got everything I wanted. This year I got Black Friday OFF :cool1: but we are traveling to see family so I think I'll stay in and shop online. SO far nothing strikes me but patiently waiting toys r us ad and walmart too.

No shopping for me. Thanksgiving is all about watching parades, going over to my parents' house, and eating! If we do any shopping that day, it's to pick up some forgotten grocery item. Same goes for Friday. It's all about sleeping in, watching the late morning news, and seeing the crowds of shoppers fighting for deals. If we go anywhere that day, it's for dinner and a movie, but not at or near a mall!

Nope I shop on Wed. Most of our shopping is done just waiting for a few things to be released to buy. We have a cabin rented in Pigeon Forge and plan to curl up in front of the fire all day Thursday and Friday read, watch TV and dip hot chocolate and eat a few s'mores. I will hit the outlets for just a few things I need on Wed. I find the deals a good enough for me.

I won't. We will be in a tiny town where nothing will be open but I wouldn't go out even if I was home.

I don't go out on black Friday so no way I would go out Thanksgiving day.

However, we also have guests who will stay until about 8pm or later and we are leaving the next AM for Disney! :cool1:

I might. We're having a very small Thanksgiving this year due to my parents' health and it will wrap up early. Our DD, big time Black Friday shopper won't be home this year though so I'm just going to wait and see how we feel.

I LOVED working Thanksgiving mornings back when I was in high school (and dinosaurs roamed the earth), the pay was fabulous. We used to pull names to see who got a shift!

My in laws have dinner early on Thanksgiving, so if there is something I want yes. Last year DH headed over to Best Buy right when they opened to grab the Playstation deal and Ipads and there wasn't anyone there. He didn't want me to go b/c he thought it would be to hectic and he was number 6 in line 15 minutes before opening:rotfl: I think the early open times makes the crowds less. I always shop at Michaels and even hit Dicks last year, but the mall is less appealing now that it is open so early. My best friend and I hit it every year for 8 years, but now there are too many teens and it is obnoxious. I always shopped for myself at the mall anyway. It isn't the same now that the stores open earlier, but it is actually easier b/c we get home from Thanksgiving by around 4 and not a lot of people are out. So I like the early opening.

Not a chance. Even if we didn't host Thanksgiving dinner, I couldn't do it. The crowds make me feel soooo anxious. In fact, the only in-person shopping I do after Thanksgiving is grocery shopping. I completely avoid malls and shopping centers as though my life depends on it. If I don't have it by Thanksgiving and can't find it online or at the grocery store, I don't need it.

I wouldn't be shopping, going out to dinner, or movies on Thanksgiving, Xmas or Easter. I even try not to travel on those days. I fully understand that some people need the discounts on the "stuff" to have presents under the tree and don't blame them for going.

I just cant do it. I really want the stores to be closed on these last family holidays.

Sales are pretty good the last two weeks of the xmas season too.

I won't be at any stores on Thursday or Friday.

I've done retail on BF--and Christmas Eve (which is almost as bad as BF) and the day after Christmas (ugh) and worked in restaurants on all the holidays (including Christmas)----and I feel for those that have to be at work on those days.

I'll do my shopping online again this year. The last 8 years, I have killed on Amazon sales. The little incidental things, I'll pick up when I have to go get TP or contact lens solution.

Nope. We will not shop on Thanksgiving Day. My thoughts are with all of those people that are being forced to work on a holiday instead of being at home with their families. Even if a store doesn't open to the public until 6:00 PM, those employees are in there hours before getting everything ready.

My husband and I have a bet going that it will now take less than 5 years before stores decide that they can open on Christmas Day. Will you then go shopping on Christmas?

No, I will not. I think it's awful that people are being pulled away from their families on a national holiday. There is nothing that I need or want that can't wait until Black Friday.

Will I go out on Thanksgiving? I don't know.

I miss having Black Friday exclusively on Friday. Getting up at 2:30 to get in line for the 4 AM Kohls opening. Going from one opening to another, finally getting home about 9 AM and crashing.

Can't do it this year. For the first time in awhile, I'm the only one off on BF (and I had to take a vacation day at that). Someone has to babysit my six-year old DGD. And there's no way I'm taking her shopping.

Dunno what time Thanksgiving dinner will be. Just going to be me, DH, DD26, DSIL and DGD. Fairly new tradition; it will only be the second time it's just the five of us. I think it will be mid-afternoon. So if something looks great at Walmart, I just may go. If dinner is at DD's, she lives two minutes away from Walmart.

Did a lot of shopping online last year. I'll probably do the same this year.

Yes! DH and I have a tradition where he goes out and gets the deals after we put the kids to bed on Thanksgiving night. He calls me and we stay on the phone and talk about what he finds. It's fun!

Would it be fun if you or your husband were the ones working? Sorry, I just feel it should remain a holiday for as many people as possible.

I have two daughters that work both Thanksgiving & Christmas Day. One is an RN and the other a Park Ranger. It is very difficult for us to find time to celebrate the holidays.

No. I don't feel it's right everyone should be entitled to the holiday. SIL works at Walmart and has to give up part of her holiday to go to work. In MA at least it's not an issue anyway - the stores aren't allowed to open until Midnight. :)

We'll be at DHS and MK Thanksgiving day, so we may shop for a thing or two while there. I was thinking we'll probably get a Dole Whip from Aloha Aisle and Waffle Sandwich from Sleepy Hollow ;).

No, I personally wouldn't.
1. I wouldn't need/want anything after just doing major shopping a month earlier
2. Our family celebrates Christmas different than Thanksgiving. Christmas we host an open house everyone comes style event and people are at our house until later in the evening. Thanksgiving has always been a set time sit down meal early in the afternoon with everyone leaving by early evening so shopping doesn't change my family time at all. I would never cut out family time to get a deal, but stores opening at 5 on Thanksgiving doesn't change that. If you are blowing off your family to shop, then you need to check your priorities, but I just think the Thanksgiving holiday is one celebrated earlier in the day allowing people the time to shop without changing that. I think that stores being open on Christmas day will never be popular.

Nobody is being forced to work on Thanksgiving. They took a job that doing it is a known part of the job. Just like people who work Sat/Sun(something I cannot imagine my dh having to do since that is when we spend family time) know when they take certain jobs. Some people don't have an option and it is the only job available, but lots of people hold jobs that are not ideal for their life(and it isn't just one day out of the year), but they need them so they have to sacrifice wants for needs. Then others enjoy working those days b/c it isn't a big deal to them.

If you are against everything being open besides emergency places(hospitals, firehouses, police stations) then fine more power to you, but if you stop at the gas station or are ok with people taking holidays then what is the difference. Nobody has to vacation on Holidays, but they choose to(and it isn't just to be with extended family). Why are hotel staff, park employees, airlines, restaurants, movie theaters employees, gas stations(back in the day hardly any of those were open on thanksgiving) family time less valuable than a person who works at Target?

Just seem laughable to complain and I dislike hypocrisy(not saying you specifically Disney1990) but many who complain are. I think most of the anti BF crew would run into Walgreens or another drug store to grab something as small as a pack of gum several years ago without thinking twice about those employees, but now that it is a popular to be anti BF they are on their soapbox condemning people who shop:rolleyes2

I LOVE Black Friday shopping. If I do go out on Thanksgiving, it will be around 8-9 pm once my kids are settled for the night. And I won't likely decide until right before I go. I WILL go out on Black Friday. I love the thrill of it. I probably won't buy anything too expensive, just stuff that is a good price and still in stock (flannel PJ pants, wrapping paper, maybe the cheap DVDs) but any MUST HAVE shopping will probably be don't online and long before then. I've already started scouring amazon lightning deals and sales. And I send texts to family when something they want is on sale. My SIL got my kids the Lego Movue yesterday. Not THE BEST price Ive seen but I know she won't go out on Black Friday and the $4 bluerays will sell out before she'd have time to grab one anyway. My step mom just got iTunes giftcards for the whole fam with 4x fuel points and buy one get one 30% off at Kroger. Love the hunt to save!
