there has been quite a few threads recently, where the original poster became upset with a persons response. In several they even specifically told a poster (by their screen name) to get off of "their" thread. Now, I know that sometimes threads are hijacked and people become upset because their original point is missed. However, I am of the opinion that I, as an original poster, only have control over the original topic. Any replies from that point on should be accepted unless extremely rude (at which point I might contact a MOD). I believe that as a public discussion board, all replies are valid in their own way. That doesn't mean I agree with all the posts! So what do you think?

I think it's hilarious when that happens and I just do a mental eye roll when the OP does that.

Some of the best conversations happen off topic.

I don't think an OP "owns" a thread.

I've had some of my threads hijacked -- and I've hijacked more than my fair share of threads. I just let it roll of my back.

I don't own my threads. I try to reply to all questions, and interesting comments that make me think about something. But I would NEVER tell someone to get off my thread. I never mind if my threads are hijacked either. I hijack alot of threads, and sometimes a hijack is one of the most interesting things on the whole thread.

Well said and the last time it happened, I just hopped out of the thread and refused to keep it bumped up for the OP.

I have recently become a little exasperated with the thread "police". Those that try to control the thread contents. They have posted threads to newbies not to post about certain topics but to look them up. Hey, if your new and start a topic that has been covered a 1000 times but you still get replies; all the more power to you! People who act as if they can tell other people to leave their threads, (thats what the ignore is for, so you can't see the posting) when they could just ignore the off topicness. I love the DIS! even when exasperated, its still some of the best entertainment around.

I voted the third option.

I don't own my threads. Everyone has the right to post their opinions on these threads, even if the OP doesn't agree. However, there are some posters who do personally attack the OP or otherwise violate the DIS rules, and people do have the right to report that.

I couldn't vote, as you didn't leave me that option.

I started the thread, I can try to steer it, but it's not under my control.

I do not own it once I set free on the web. It started with me, but I don't own it. I may not like where it goes...but once I let it loose...I become part of it.

No... but technically the OP has an ultimate say in the thread... as in they can request it closed if they so choose to. Not just anyone on the thread can do that. However, once a thread is started, I feel it gets a life of its own (for better or worse) and no one truly owns it (save Pete)

If you request that your post be deleted or locked, do you have to give a reason? Or because you are the original poster, will Mods do it just because you requested it? I honestly do not know the answer to this question.

I think it's silly when people tell certain posters to stay off their thread. I don't mind too much if they ask for a thread not to turn into a debate, but that's where your control ends. People don't have to do what you ask them to.

I replied to a thread the other day simply because the OP asked for replies from only one type of person, and I didn't fit that description. I probably wouldn't have posted at all if the OP hadn't done that.

Noone OWNS them -
but that said I know the Mods work real hard here to remind people to treat others with respect, and common courtesy (therefore not derailing threads from the original content for your own purposes)
I think it has to do with intent -
there are 'accidental hi-jacking that are no big deal (to most) (oh hey - did ya watch the game- haven't seen you on the boards... back when I was a kid)
then there are intentional derailments... I think those are wrong....

I had someone say this to me today. I was a little irritated. I had looked at the info that is on a sticky, along with some other threads (about the dining plan), but I was getting more confused. If a person doesn't want to answer a thread about something that has been asked before, that's fine, but don't post and tell someone to look at the already posted info. And I'd already mentioned reading other threads about it.

I've done this. I may have given a little bit of reason. I used the report a post feature as pretty much the reason why the thread needed to be closed.

Report a post seems to be the easiest way to handle a situation when a thread gets out of control.

I voted to option #1.....only because I stayed at a Holiday Inn last night........ ;)

I don't really care what anybody says on my threads, whether it's on topic or not.

While I don't believe anyone owns a thread and that opposing opinions are welcome, I think the OP and others involved in the thread have every right to be upset and offended if people come in and turn a discussion into a joke. Veering off topic is one thing if it happens as part of the conversation - purposely derailing it to get your jollies is another. That happened a lot last week with lots of dancing bananas so we could all see how much they were enjoying themselves.
