do you "OWN" a thread you start

DO YOU "OWN" YOUR THREAD

  • yes, and I can tell posters to go away if I want to no matter what

  • yes, if posters are off topic I can ask them to stay off the thread

  • No, all replies are welcome even if I don't agree

  • No, but if you are rude, mean or attack my position, I will defend myself

I feel all replies are welcome even if I don't agree with my opinion but there is no need to be rude or nasty.

I have been annoyed if I start a post and one or two posters end up having a private conversation or series of in-jokes on it. That hasn't happened here, but it happens quite often at a business-owners board that I (used to) frequent.

I have requested that one of my threads be closed. I had posted a question/vent that turned out to be pretty unpopular, and even after I acknowledge that the naysayers had a point, and posted that I had changed my mind, people who didn't read the whole thread continued to post to slam me. I did wait a few days, in hopes that the thread would die on its own, but when it kept popping up on the first page, I asked that it be closed.

I don't agree with posters who essentially declare that they are only looking for support and will not accept anything but hugs or sympathy. It's just not realistic to post to a public forum and expect people to only respond if they agree with you. Especially in a community that you know is as active an opinionated as the DIS.

That's kind of a peeve of mine and it's happened to me before too (not so much on here, but on another forum I frequent). I wish people would read the entire thread before going off like that. I can understand if the thread is extremely long, but this even happens when the thread is relatively short!

We don't own our threads??? But....I thought that's what the sponsoring $$ went to!!!! :rotfl:

NORMALLY I don't care where a thread goes
so long as it stays friendly even if people disagree

HOWEVER I do think that people do not need to be rude and insulting just because they disagree with what the OP says or is Doing

i also agree that the people who trash the OP with out reading the whole thread are RUDE because you can't tell if something has changed

when i say MY THREAD I don't mean ownership just that it is a thread I started
and yes I have asked people to stick to topic

It is really annoying when an OP asks a question and you are trying to reply and help and your answer gets lost in a sea of debate or personal conversation about a sporting event that has nothing to do with the topic

JMHO

Whenever I start a thread I stay with it from start to finish.

I've never told anyone to get off a thread I've started.

I don't mind hijacking, as long as its interesting and pertains at least in part to the topic at hand. When its two people talking back and forth to each other in some sort of code known only to them, I'd prefer they take it to PM. Its not that I don't think they have a right to post, I just find it distracting and sort of pointless. :confused3

Oh, also, I have the ability to ascertain when someone is looking for support, as opposed to opinion. When I can tell that someone is strictly looking for someone to vent to/lean on, I don't offer my opinion, just my support. Some people feel this is misleading...I'm not one of those people...I think everyone needs a cyber hug with no judgement every once in a while. :goodvibes

If someone is posting irrelevant info on a thread I've started I guess I would "report post to moderator" but I don't think I've ever done that OR asked someone to "leave my thread" I've been here for years though and can't say absoloutely.

I know that everyone has their own opinion and I welcome them on the threads I start, but it is kind of disappointing when I start a thread then come back later and see several responses only to find someone has gone "off topic" and they are now discussing something else. I feel they should start their own thread if they want to take someone else's off topic. Or worse when it is a few "friends" and they start joking back and forth amongst themselves, completely ignoring what the original topic is about.

I think that if I started a successful thread and people were enjoying themselves on it I wouldn't care how many twists and turns it took, unless it was making fun of someone (most importantly not of me! ) or if it was one of those topics that just takes over every thread and are getting old.

Some of the best threads I've ever read here are very off-topic! That's part of the fun of it, that's what I say!

I had someone say this to me today. I was a little irritated. I had looked at the info that is on a sticky, along with some other threads (about the dining plan), but I was getting more confused. If a person doesn't want to answer a thread about something that has been asked before, that's fine, but don't post and tell someone to look at the already posted info. And I'd already mentioned reading other threads about it.

I just sent you a PM about this.

When you start a conversation with 70,000 other people, you never know what to expect! :)

You can control your conversations in RL - in cyberspace you have no control.

I believe that the OP can try to get a hijacked thread back on topic, but they cannot control what is said.

I hate how someone will start a thread on a very serious issue like the correct way to hang toilet paper in the bathroom, and some people will answer it with there opinions, and other people will make jokes that have absolutely nothing to do with toilet paper in the bathroom! I know that some of these threads go on for 7 pages, but all 7 pages should be about toilet paper rolls in the bathroom. If not, the poster should be taken out back, and beaten. Come on...this is a Disney board. If we can't come here to get serious answers to the serious life altering questions that effect all of us on a day to day basis, where can we go???

Nope, don't own it. I try to steer it if it goes OT, but basically they just go where they go and that's okay.

But I voted for # 4, because I did start one once where people began attacking my SO...and the thread wasn't even about him. It was clear it was never going to get back on topic, so I asked the mods to close it.

I just think people going off topic on a thread is just a matter of people with short attenti...oh look a guy with an umbrella. :umbrella:

I voted for #4 because I had to defend myself on a thread I started and then others changed my wording.

Don't take this the wrong way, but people who post pics of umbrellas usually rub me the wrong way, unless it's a thread about umbrellas or its raining out, or there is umbrellas on the toilet paper and its a thread about the correct way to hang toilet paper.
