Do you make your own stuffing/dressing for Thanksgiving?

Yes - I make old fashioned bread stuffing. You use stuffing cubes, celery and onion (both fried in butter), chicken broth, sage and thyme. I stuff the turkey and then put the left over in a casserole covered with Reynolds wrap to bake separately. It's plain but delicious!

I make a meat stuffing. Seasoned bread cubes, ground beef, sweet sausage, salami, eggs, grated Romano cheese and garlic. I think that is everything. I stuff the turkey and put leftovers in a baking dish. It's a recipe from my grandmother. We love it!

I LOOOOVE stuffing, and make mine from scratch every Thanksgiving. It is a cornbread/sausage/chestnut stuffing and it is so good. If you want the recipe, PM me. :Pinkbounc

OMG! I could make LOTS of different types. I would love to hear more. I will take any and all recipes anyone wants to share. All of these sound so much better than a box. I could try a few for Thanksgiving and then some for Christmas. How cool are the people on the board!!!!!

This is exactly what I make! Plain but soooo good! I use the recipe from Betty Crocker, called "Bread Stuffing"...same ingredients as described above (or extremely close). We don't stuff our bird, though...no one in my family likes it that way...just put it in a casserole dish and bake it separately.

I make my own. Follow the back of the package of a bread crumb bag.....I use onions, celery, crumbs, green pepper, sweet turkey sausage and yams. It's wonderful. I bake in the oven not in the bird.

I make a cornbread and sausage stuffing. YUMM!!! I won't be making it this year though because we'll be at Disney!!! I'll post the recipe tomorrow.

I love stuffing!! With gravy of course. I make my stuffing with bread cubes, onions, green peppers and Jimmy Deans sage sausage. Cook onions and peppers with butter, set aside. Cook sausage, mix onions, peppers and sausage in with bread cubes. You may have to add more butter so the stuffing stays moist. I do not like to stuff my turkey. I cook my stuffing in the oven with foil covering it. YUMMMMM :goodvibes How long till Turkey Day??

Better yet, How long till Xmas trip to Disney

Love stuffing!!! The best part of Thanksgiving if you ask me!!

We make the day before so it has time to absorb all the flavors.

We saute celery and onions in lots of real butter til they are soft and see through.

While that is cooking, which by the way makes your house smell like thanksgiving!! awesome!! We take the gizzards from the turkey and boil them in water with a boullion cube for flavor.

My mom the stuffing guru, dries out her own bread on the kitchen table for days and then cuts them into cubes, I think she also has bread cubes from a package standing by in case she doesnt have enough bread.

ANother wacky thing my mom does, it to take one of the vegetable drawers from her frig, she has big deep drawers, and cleans it really well and uses that to make the stuffing in! I dont know why, but she has done that since I was a kid.

when the celery and onions and butter are done, she mixes that with the bread crumbs and adds the gizzard broth to make it really moist. Then she adds sage and salt and pepper to taste. She always makes it extra moist because as it sits over night, it soaks up all of the flavor and juice of the broth YUM!!!

THen she covers the drssing in the drawer with foil and lets it sit over night in the frig until it is time to put the turkey in. We stuff the front and back of the turkey and put the rest of it in a cassarole to cook. We always make alot because it is everyones favorite!

Good luck and Bon apetite! (sp?)

Ok, I have to say gizzard in my stuffing, GROSS!! My mom would always put that crap in her stuffing. I hated it :crazy2: Now that I have a family of my own, that gross stuff in the bag goes right in the trash!!

Another really sick thing about the gizzard, my mom-mom eats that stuff for her dinner on turkey day!!

Sorry if I made any one sick

WHO LOVES DISNEY??? :earboy2:

Yes I make the cornbread with biscuit stuffing. We combine 2 cornbreads to 1 biscuit pan. I make dressing and stuffing together. Make 2 13 by 9 pans of cornbread and 1 of biscuits but do not make individual biscuits make it all together like the cornbread. Then take swanson chicken broth along with celery chopped up real fine and onion. Along with Sage, boiled eggs etc. I cannot think of everything right now. I learned this from my mom and her from her mom and so on :flower:

I make cornbread dressing similar to this. sautee celery and onion in butter, add cornbread and chicken broth(until mixture is slightly soft), add 2 eggs lightly beaten , add poultry seasoning(has sage in it) and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Cook in casserole dish.

Instead of chicken broth you can add turkey drippings.

Having grown up with some kind of cornbread mush that *gagged* me, I am sorry to say that I have resorted to Stove Top. HOWEVER...I saute onion and celery with some sage and thyme and add that to the boiling water. After the stuffing is ready, I divide it and stir chopped pecans in one half. No one ever knows as long as I get rid of the "evidence" beforehand!!! DH and I have been married 10 years and have had 10 Thanksgivings and he just learned my secret last year. :teeth: He *still* doesn't know about my gravy...;)

I always make my own, but take a little help from Stovetop or Bells. I saute onions, celery and sometimes apples in butter. I also saute pork sausage and season with pepper and Bells seasoning. Then toss with the stuffing mix or bread cubes and chicken broth. I almost never stuff the turkey anymore.

Once in a great while I make a lithuanian cracker stuffing for my DH, and then I stuff the turkey, because it is sooooogood.

This is exactly how I make it (minus the sage since I hate that spice). I also add pepper.

sounds like the recipe in my red plaid Better Homes & Gardens cookbook. turns out great every year! Mom would boil the gizzard, mince it and add it but no way Jose on that idea :guilty: Poultry seasoning and tons of sage are mandatory - Dad loves sage so mom adds twice as much as she thinks is enough, then adds that much again. So far there has never been to much sage in the stuffing for him.

I'm a stuff the bird person, DH and his family are dressing on the side - his mom makes stovetop these days. ick. :guilty: don't even get me started in DH's grandma's pumpkin pie :crazy2: she's 91 and no one will tell her that she can't cook well anymore. me included - so I smile politely and take something else.

:rotfl: :rotfl: My aunt is 92 and bakes pies for every special gathering. There was a day when they were to die for, but today.....you never know. The only way is to try them..........my Mom, 84, is the brave soul who is elected for that task.
