Do you make ressie without discount?

When I just called to check for AP rates, the CM was really trying to get me to make the reservation without the discount, and then have it applied when they come out. Do most of you do this?

I told her that the reason I didn't want to do this was because I couldn't afford a moderate resort without the discount, she still wanted me to make it though.

I guess I've always went with the school of thought that I didn't want to boost up their bookings, so that they will offer AP rates.

Just wondering what others do?

You will hear two schools of thought on this. First, is just like you say, if everybody books hoping codes will come out, there may be no need for codes. and then we will all be paying higher rates for our vacations. Second, if you don't book then you run the risk of your choice not being available. The conventional wisdom seems to be book what you want or can afford and if and when codes come out, then modify or change your reservation as necessary. I am not convinced of either way being better than the other. Depends on when you are travelling. You certainly do not want to get shut out all together.

I book what I can afford assuming I have to pay rack rate, then if a discount comes out, great! If I can afford to upgrade with a discount, I do, if not, I stick with what I had.

Yes and no. Last year I knew I was staying in Value regardless so I booked my rooms that I wanted and later when AP rates came out I had them apply the discount to my room.

If there were no AP rates then I would have either stuck with my original reservation or tried for a moderate because with that AP rate the rooms would have been only 2/night more than rack at value.

This year I have my rooms booked, I booked with my AAA discount so I know that at least I am staying where I want and have some sort of discount. Now if AP rates come, then I will have them applied. If they don't then at least I know I can afford to stay where I am booked with my AAA discount and will probably do so.
