Inspired by this Use Year question .

When we bought in '99 we selected a June UY... for no particular reason...that's what they gave us. It seems to work well for us, though. We like to vacation in June, anyway, and if we ever run into trouble with our June ressie we know that we've got plenty of time to use up the points. After the kids grow up, I can see us doing more fall trips... again, June works pretty good, as a hedge against having to make a ressie change.

How about you? Do you like your use year(s)?

This is an interesting question! I've only been a DVC owner for 1 year, and when I joined I really didn't understand the nuances of use year...boy, I do now!!

Since we always are planning on attending the Food and Wine Festival- as well as taking a major trip in December- I've found that our October Use year serves us well. If we need to cancel, we have plenty of time to re-book, even if we are borrowing points!

I pretty much stumbled into the best use year for typical vacation plans, but sometimes when we stumble we have to throw our hand s up and say "tad-dah!!:)

We knew nothing about the nuances of UY when we purchased. We were given March, and while we most like to vacation in January, it has never been an issue. I don't think UY is much to obsess about.

I agree with Diane. Not worth obsesssing over.

We received August when we bought because that's what they gave us. Since we have never had to cancel a trip, it's really of no concern to me except for the banking deadlines.

I admit that August would be a lucky choice for us if we ever do have to cancel a trip. We usually travel to WDW towards the end of the calendar year and do not travel in the summer (too hot for us Northerners, LOL).

Best wishes -

When we bought in at VB, we were given a Sept. UY. Sept. works well in my mind since I'd been in school or working at one for most of my life, so Sept. always seemed more of a 'new year' than January. Our Guide did point out that Sept. UY works "well" with our love of the less crowded parks in Dec. He didn't point out that ALL OF YOU like that time too. :)

Our OKW contract has a december UY. Generally that works as well for a Dec. trip, but it does mean paying more attention to details when a trip leverages the tail end of Thanksgiving weekend.

It's no big deal, but when we joined we were given an April use year, and like others I didn't fully understand the significance of this. I do now and as we like to visit in March, this is not a good use year for us.

Just this year my SIL sadly died whilst we were away in March and we had to cut our vacation short and lost points as a result.

Hopefully that wll be a one-off because travelling all the way from the UK, you don't change your travel plans lightly.

We have two contracts and two use years.....February and October.

It would be nice to have them both the same UY, but it has been no problem keeping track of them and using them both. The software programs provided by the good people here have been wonderful in helping to track and plan point usage.

I don't really care about which month the use year is in, but again I do tend to like the February one because then my UY and trip year are almost always going to be in the same calendar year.

Sometimes, it does get a bit confusing to be planning a 2006 trip with 2005 UY October points. But again, it's really no big deal.

December UY for all our contracts but it really doesn't seem to make a difference.

I actually had a slight problem with my UY this year. As I said, we've got June... This year we started our vacation on Memorial Day weekend, I had to borrow 44 points into my 2003 UY to cover May 30/31. If I ever had to cancel my trip, those point would have been history.

Anyway... it all worked out, but you never know. If you're given an option you might as well pick a UY that's to your advantage.

I am very happy with my Feb uy, I usually travel in Feb/March.

Then I bought resale with June uy, this seemed to do well, because we decided to have a winter trip and a summer trip.

The small problem I encountered was waitlisting a ressie with points combined from both contracts. I was given a hard time about it when it came through, they said I was only waitlisted for xyz contract. Well I had to be persistant to get what I was due, but it did cause alot of confusion.

I also have found ms to be very helpful with transferring from one to the other to make one ressie. But again , there is usually alot of confusion on the part of MS involved. Their system was not designed to handle single partys with multiple use years.

Never heard of having to "waitlist by contract". I thought we waitlisted to get a reservation! Good for you for being persistent. I have found that if MS gives you an answer you don't expect, you either need to ask for a Supervisor or call back. It's not that unusual for an MS CM to have insufficient training. Glad to have these boards so I know what is what!

Don't have personal experience with two different contracts (just have original plus one add-on for same resort and use year), but it does seem from posts on the DIS that the reservation system could use a few enhancements, doesn't it? :teeth:

Best wishes-

Giving this a BUMP to catch any last minute votes...

I'll report my poll results this weekend.

I too stumbled into this, not understanding use year, but I'm happy with February. I usually take one trip in late Feb/early March, and another in Sept/Oct, so this works pretty well.

BTW, I had a hard time voting since I'm not a WE. There are some single owners ya know. ;)

We have October. Not good for late summer trips as we have so much going on in our lives there is always the possibility of a need to cancel. So we schedule for early summer.

This is a great month to have if you travel holiday time or spring break or to Epcot food and wine festival. Plenty of time to cancel and bank if you need to. When our kids are older we'll probably travel more during holidays and winter so this will be a good month to have.

I don't mind my February UY, but if I had it to do all over again, I'd probably do September. We travel in February (when Mardi Gras does not coincide with President's Week), December and we are hoping to start a September tradition this year. I kind of worry about the December trip, being so close to the end of the UY.
