do you like practical gifts or luxury items?

when you're putting in your holiday requests which way do you go? I've stuggled with money until the past few years. I tend to be conservative on my gifts. I ask for practical things that are also a luxury. Examples might be a kitchen aid mixer, thick terry cloth robe, new cd player for the car, etc.
It is my anniversary this weekend. I told dh there are things I want for the house and car. I want to go to the movies and spend the weekend fixing things around the house.
Maybe in another couple years when I am not paying for 3 kids college tuition i'll think differently.

I ask my parents and in-laws for practical gifts. This year we want a retractable screen door for our entry door.
I ask my husband for unique experiences. Last year I asked for scuba certification classes.
I ask my kids for handmade items.

I guess it would be considered practical - books; scrapbook supplies; computer supplies; slippers; etc.

I always ask for practical gifts. My DH asked me what I wanted as a wedding gift from him--I told him sheets. :confused3

I like luxury items which I consider to be things I'd really like but wouldn't necessarily spend the money on myself. Now my idea of luxury and anyone else's are probably pretty different! :teeth: I don't wear jewelry or collect expensive doodads. Luxuries to me are hard cover books I may covet (instead of getting them from the library) or a boxed dvd set--things like that.

I'm with the OP. I would prefer to get the practical luxury items. Like this year, I would LOVE a new comforter for my bed. Things like that.

Last year I asked for "shelves" and I got a beautiful sofa table.

My parents know to just give me the money. My mother is obsessed with "having things to open", so she'll usually get me a few things. Last year, she got me a set of 4 cordless phones, which I REALLY needed. She's also gotten me a sandwich maker, a Mickey toaster, a 'smores maker....things I can use, but not a necessity. Generally though, her and my dad's REAL gift comes in the form of a deposit into my bank account.

DH and I usually buy something big for the house....this year, we're buying a new bedroom set. We'll get smaller things....he's gotten me a bathrobe and nice sheets or an iTunes card.

My best friend and I always get each other something that says "Best Friends" - it's been a 15 year tradition. It's amazing what you can find with "Best Friends" on it. :goodvibes

some pratical gifts I consider a luxury. For the last two years I asked everyone for some really really good pans. Everyone laughed and I didn't get it. Finally my husband bought me a beautiful, heavy, roasting pan. I use it all the time!!! It's my favorite thing at the moment too. This year I want frying pans!!!! The kind a chef would buy. ;)

that's just how i am. i'd never buy an expensive pan if i have a decent basic one. But i'd love it as a gift, knives too. I almost never buy a hardback book but love them or gc's to borders as gifts. My sister always gets luxuries like expensive jewelry, etc. There's a part of me that would like something like that but I am never completely comfortable with that. When the kids are thru college I would like trips as gifts. i've wanted to do a barefoot cruise.

Definitely a practical gift person here. The only impractical thing I've asked for as an adult is a specific video game, last year. Otherwise I'm happy with all manner of practical gifts--even socks and underwear!

practical. My mil usually asks me what I would like for christmas, I usually tell her sheets, towels, stuff for the kitchen. She always gets me a few clothes too:)

Luxury practical, definitely. So far, my husband and I have "given" each other a washer/dryer, a car, and a TV. (OK, the TV was a lot closer to luxury than practical...) This year we're talking about couches.

My family tends to give more fun gifts, which is fine. His family, well, half gives good gifts and half gives....stuff we have no place for with a mobile infant.

My dad bought my mom a leaf blower for their 40th wedding anniversary. I've never seen her happier so I think she likes practical gifts.

:rotfl2: My DH once gave me a tent for Valentine's Day, that romantic devil! I totally get your mom, though. Last year all I wanted was a good vacuum cleaner and that's what I got. I spent Christmas Day happily vacuuming everything in sight

I love receiving luxery presents! I never buy that luxery items for myself but if I need something practical, I'll just buy it.
My dh is a pretty decent gift buyer, thankfully. :)
But anything from my dd11 is wonderful; I always love the presents she picks out. She always has a very thoughtful reason behind them.

I prefer luxury. I told my husband years ago to NEVER buy me anything for my birthday, anniversary or Christmas that plugs in, unless I specifically ask for it :teeth:

Sounds like what I told my dh! :teeth: I also said nothing to do with household chores or work!

Now, everyone in my family knows I do not enjoy cooking - can do it and I am pretty decent at it but do not enjoy it. But every year, my mil buys me cooking stuff...ie...cooking apron, cookbooks, pots/pans...etc...it just cracks me up! DH, dd11, and I get a big kick out of it!

That's my rule, too! Nothing with an electrical cord. :teeth: DD almost wouldn't let DH buy me a small stereo one year because it had an electrical cord. He snuck back out and bought it when she wasn't around.
