Do you like fruitcake?

My Mother-in-law made THE BEST fruitcake! Sadly, she passed away in 2000 at age 62 from ALS. She had given me her recipe so I continued the fruitcake tradition for our family, making 2 batches in November each year. I remember especially my Father-in-law, his eyes would light up when I gave him his loaf. Our kids liked it too. But the cost for the candied fruit has skyrocketed. So I’ve stopped making it. I bought a small Claxton loaf at Walmart and while it was okay it wasn’t good enough that I wanted to buy any more of it.

I don't think I've ever had "real" fruitcake, actually. I once had a Christmas tea party where I made a cake with regular dried fruits and nuts in it, with an orange zest glaze, no booze. It was delicious, and I would think that even a regular fruitcake could probably taste good if it's made properly. But to me that would mean using natural dried fruits and not those weird neon colored candied things.

I can honestly say, that in my 54 years of life, I’ve never had it.
One day I should order one, just so I can say that I tried it.
In fact, this thread has inspired me to google where I can buy one in my area. My DD22 has never tried it too, and I feel it’s my motherly responsibility to make sure she tries it too :thumbsup2

Yes! My mother gets us a Collin Street Bakery fruitcake every year. We look forward to it!

I was listening to a podcast on fruitcake and it got me thinking, I don’t know if I like it or not since I have never tried it.

I’m not a fan of walnuts, pecans, or almonds so their presence immediately turns me off from wanting to try.

As a kid I remember my mom always buying a Claxton fruitcake every Christmas season. She was a fan.
Your mom bought a fruit cake every year when you were a kid and you never tried it?
My mom's older sister, and her sister in law both made amazing fruit cake and we would get them as Christmas gifts every year, so I grew up with it. But other than kale and black licorice, I like everything. It is a tradition. And fruit cake was served at all my Canadian Cousins weddings. another tradition.

It’s not something I grew up with, but I’m a fan. I love dried fruits, nuts, and spices, so it makes sense that I would like it.

I also love the stollen others have mentioned.

When visiting EPCOT last month I bought these candy cakes from Germany pavilion that were little bite sized rectangles that were like a combination of lebkuchen and stollen with cherry jam and marzipan and crushed nuts and ginger and liqueur that were covered in dark chocolate and…oh, sorry, did I get off topic? 😅 They were fruitcake adjacent and they were scrumptious!

I don't like fruitcake or panettone, which to me seems like just a lighter version of fruitcake. Yuck.

I have never liked nuts, so eating something visible stuffed with nuts was never something I wanted to do.
Told my wife about this comment. She always just ate the nuts out of the fruitcake and left the fruit for me.
