Do you lick the bowl???

Nope. I don't like raw cookie dough. (or cake batter) I will lick it if I get a spot on my finger or hand, but not just lick a bunch out of the bowl or the beaters. Eeeeww.

Now then ... I do have a little trouble staying away from the finished BAKED product ... :lmao:

.

I am 48 years old, been licking bowls and beaters since I was about 7. I have never had food poisoning and neither have my kids, they oldest being 14 and boy to they fight to lick. Sorry, but I just don't know anyone this has happened to, but I know it does. But then again, so does mad cow and I haven't given up red u red meat either.
Top each their own, but licking the bowl is something I will continue to do.

You don't get mad cow from eating red meat. You can however get it from eating part of the nervous system of INFECTED cows. It's almost unheard of in this country, unlike salmonella. If you ever had it, you would change your mind very quickly. I'm just amazed at the justifications that people use. I'm sure you wear seatbelts in you car even if you've never been in an accident right? You may not think you know anyone that this has happened to but it's a fact that a percentage of eggs are infected with salmonella. But there are lots of people who get food poisoning every year, thinking it is just a stomach bug. The ones you hear about are those that are hospitalized and die which does happen. The 1 in 6 number I posted about food poisoning was just reported out in the last few weeks by the CDC I think. I didn't make it up. I have never met anyone who hasn't had food poisoning at some point in their life. Even if it's just a mild case. I was sick for 8 days this past summer with it from a restaurant and believe me, it's not something I ever want to get again. You wouldn't either.

BTW, I love steak and don't see a risk of eating properly prepared beef so that argument is just weird.

If I ever did have food poisoning it was very mild and was attributed to "just a bug".

So I assume you don't eat hot dogs or hamburgers either?

Avoid eating parts of the cow that are likely to carry the infection (brain, ground products, which could include hot dogs, bologna, or certain luncheon meats).

I'll take my changes with raw cookie dough, but not mad cow.

I lick the bowl, beaters, spoons, whatever else managed to get batter on it.

It's too delicious not to!

I've never had food poisoning.

I've never had food poisoning.

I lived until I was 42 without ever getting food poisoning. I am quite positive it was food poisoning because of the violent way the food was leaving my body, seriously I have never been so sick in my life and I wanted to die....but I still eat cake batter. :thumbsup2

You realize of course, now that I've made that claim, I will get the world's most violent case EVER in short order, right? :lmao:

right now, i'm pregnant, so no. but normally, i do. although DD loves to lick the bowl, so i leave most of it for her.

Just wondering how many of you avoid the warnings about eggs and salmonella and still lick the bowl of cake batter, brownie batter, cookie dough? I used to when I was a kid but you won't catch me now nor will I let my kids. I miss that awesome chunk of raw choc chip cookie dough though.

I still do it depending on what's in the mix. Still the risk is greater for me due to various health issues, but that hasn't stopped me yet:rolleyes1

Oh, I hope not!!! I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy...it was just awful. I probably should have went to the ER, but that would have meant leaving the vicinity of the toilet so I just couldn't do it.

I haven't eaten a hot dog since (I think that's what did it) but I still risk it with cake batter and cookie dough....nothing could make me give up that!! :thumbsup2

Great post. I understand being willing to take the risk, but I'm surprised at how many people seem to think they're building immunity.
I'm sure there are all sorts of studies to prove that people aren't building up immunity to whatever's out there that might make you sick or kill you. Studies that are most likely paid for or underwritten by Merck, AstraZenica, Pfizer, etc. There were also lots of studies done that showed using antibacterial soap, bleaching counters and toys and scrubbing all surfaces lead to healthier kids, too. Until it turned out that keeping kids away from germs actually made them sicker.

Sold a lot of Dial soap, Clorox bleach and Lysol spray though, didn't it?

Whenever I see conclusions coming out of the medical industry, I have to temper those opinions with their 50/50 track record and know that what's "true" in this generation will likely be "false" in the next. This year's Celebrex is next year's TV Ad by some law firm advertising a class action lawsuit.

In the meantime, I'm eating the cake batter. :thumbsup2

You can't build immunity to e-coli and salmonella since there are so many different variants and they are mutating constantly. I personally know someone who has had multiple cases of food poisoning because he continues to eat from a certain store. He has built no immunity but will kill himself if he continues to eat there.

BTW, drug companies have no dog in the fight concerning building immunity to food poisoning. None of them manufacture anything that can counter or cure it so why would they care?

Everyone who has said they have never had food poisoning can never be sure. If you've ever had a gastrointestinal illness, you may have had food poisoning. Food poisoning hits within 6 to as much as 72 hours after you've eaten something that is infected/tainted, so you can never know for sure. Don't say never. Ah, ignorance is bliss, until it bites you in the butt.

Take a few biology classes and you might learn something. What is scientific about saying that you've never had something? I've never had malaria but I know it exists. Wow.

No licking raw eggs in our family YUCK.

I've had one serious bout of confirmed food poisoning and it took me about 6 months to fully recover so now I am extra careful, I would hate to live through that again.

Careful that you don't get a nosebleed looking down on all of us from that high horse. BTW, raw chocolate chip cookie dough ROCKS :thumbsup2

I've had a rare and severe form of food poisoning, listeriosis, because of eating raw eggs in cake batter. I was out for weeks.

I still eat raw eggs. I figure, the odds of me getting it again now are astronomical. I know something could happen (esp. since I'm a Microbiology/Biochemistry/French major) but you only live once, and I would prefer a life with raw dough than not.

ETA: I also eat steak sometimes that I've only browned the outside of the steak (the inside will be a little cold still) and I eat eggs sunny side up. I'm a dare devil. The funny thing is, I cannot, whatsoever eat chicken, turkey or a hamburger that is pink in middle... even a little.

Yes I do, I believe british eggs are pasturised but will still do it when I have my own hens. You have to ask why are so many eggs being infected in the first place, and a lot has to do with caged birds being stacked up as they are if the top bird has saemonella every bird that gets pooped on will get it as well. I worked for an animal feed firm once and they used animal by products in the feed, this was kept on the floo with rats running over it no wonder we had so much problems.
