For those who watched amazing race did you know before you watched?

for those who didn't watch, do you know what a scarab is? (just answer in the yes before watching column. hey, its early, I didn't really set it up very well).

was I the only one surprised that noone seemed to know what this was? Or am I just a geek who does? LOL!

I couldn't believe it either!

I think I do..are they (highlight below)

<table bgcolor = black><tr><td> Those beetle thingies that were in the movie The Mummy? </td></tr></table>

I did thanks to DS' love of Aladdin when he was little. :D

I knew. I liked Journey as a kid and that was the symbol on a lot of their album covers.

Yes, and I never saw Amazing Race.

I study Egyptology. Yes, I know what a scarab is. :)

Don't read on if you don't want to know....

I presume we are not supposed to post what it is here (like a spoiler) but I can tell you they originated from dung beetles and reason that the Egyptians were fascinated by them was because to them, they symbolized rebirth with the way they saw them rise up from the ground each morning and then seem to go away in the night, and partly because of what they eat. :crazy2: :faint:

They are very common in Egyptian artifacts, and were often worn as amulets and seen not only on jewelry worn by people, but also carved as jewelry on statuary of dieties. I'm actually wearing a necklace with one designed into it now & I have a ring with one on it (and a paperweight!).

On the other hand, I have no idea what the Amazing Race is. I know it's some sort of reality show, but that's it.

Yes we both knew and we were laughing that the others didnt.

Dan, pertaining to swords, isn't that a scabbard, which is a sheath for a sword?

I do know what a scarab is and I do know what the Amazing Race is although I don't watch it.

I am sure that any female in my age group (50 something) has a scarab bracelet somewhere in their jewelry box. I do.

I was surprised that not one of contestants knew what a scarab was.

Even if you haven't read about scarabs in books (I've been hooked on books taking place in Egypt ever since reading Agatha Christie's "Death on the Nile" when I was 15), I couldn't believe none of them had seen the movie "The Mummy" with Brendan Frazier. They played a part in that movie.

I was stunned that so many teams had no clue what a scarab was. But I've been fascinated by Egypt and its history, so maybe I'm the unusual one.

Here are some pictures...

The two above are various jewelry fashioned after Egyptian jewelry. Often the scarab is pictured like the first pic here.

A clipart I found. Scarabs like this, in these colors were often adorning tombs and homes...

Winged scarab.

I used to have a scarab bracelet when I was a kid...Long, long ago...

I had heard of it before, but I like to read books about archeology. Not a very pleasant little guy, huh! :earseek:
