I just learned this form a commercial fisherman. Interesting.

Did you know, scallops are injected with water to make then bigger/heavier? How is that legal? He is going to see if he can get me some TRUE scallops, so I can see the difference in taste.

I would much rather deal with water injected scallops. I can prepare for that. What I don't care for is the imitation bullpoop - the skate wings that have been punched out & marketed as scallops.

This is one reason why I love living in Southern New England - fresh, REAL seafood is easy to come by. When I am lazy, I know what markets I can go to..Personally, I find the best seafood is the stuff I get myself - bringing in a lobster from my own trap or raking for quahogs & scallops. I don't have to wonder just how fresh they are or if they were "tampered" with! :goodvibes

i hate the "polish" they put on produce (apples, oranges, tomatos). it makes some of them taste waxy.

i also don't like what seems to be happening more with in-store bakeries. EVERYTHING has this thin sugar glaze on it. i think they figure if it glints in the light or shines it will catch someones eye. IIICK!

That doesn't surprise me. Food additives.

Don't know if they still do it (or are allowed to)
but red meat, especialy steak, has something "done"
to it behind the scenes to make it more appealing
when you're shopping in the supermarket (i.e. "redder").

Also, all ketchup bottles, plastic or glass, are slightly green
- it makes the red of the ketchup more appealing when you're shopping.

And yet we fall for it, and reward the retailers with our business as a result. They'd be crazy to do anything else.

Skates are similar to sting rays, I believe.

all processed pork that is not cut at your grocery market is injected, all beef that is cut by the meat cutter fresh at your local grocery does NOT have any thing in it to make it look redder , when you open a pack of hamberger and it isnt as red inside it is be cause the oxegen has not his it yet.All chicken processed had water injected it is not leagal to use any hormones. Milk must state that it has come from hormone feed dairy cows.

They used to wash the smelly fish (read as aging) in the fish store with amonia and then rinse it to get rid of the smell and make it seem fresh. I have seen it done otherwise I would not believe it.
