Do you keep alcoholic beverages locked up?

Even the most trustworthy of kids will experiment ...

When my ex moved out of the house, I emptied the liquor cabinet because I don't drink. My sons (then 18 and 20) laughed -- the vodka and gin that I thought I was dumping was already mostly water! They had tried it and then brought it back up to its original level.

Both good kids -- no problems, but the temptation was there.

Just a thought,
Edie

(and besides, locking up the booze isn't going to keep a teen from obtaining it elsewhere). We do keep it out of the reach of the toddlers that visit now and then though.

You are correct there...my parents never locked it up, in fact we had a big stocked bar downstairs which was also our rec room BUT...I never drank any of theirs...by 15 I knew how to get it outside and many kids I knew drank by then so it was not hard getting anything you wanted on the outside..no need to mess with my familes alcohol! Anyone who thinks kids can't get a hold of it because they lock the stuff up at home is delusional...we used to ask someone going in to 7-11 to pick us up a case and most of the time we didn't have to ask many until one would do it for us.

My DS is 11 and we have a fair amount of alcohol in the house. It is not locked up at this point, but it is something that DH is considering as DS gets older. I don't have a huge problem with DS "sneaking" a bit here and there (of course he would be punished) but I am more concerned about things getting out of control if he has friends over. I would not appreciate knowing that my DS got smashed on his friends' parents liquor, and therefore will guard against the same thing happening here.

So far, DS has shown an aversion to alcohol and is very vocal about his negative feelings on drinking. In the future, if he feels a need to drink, I know that his experimentation is best done at home.
