Do you husk corn at the store? Why?

I have never seen anyone husk corn in the store. There are no trash bins for it either. I usually get my corn from a local farmstand and they wouldn't appreciate it if you started husking the corn there.

I think the real question is, do you eat your corn on the cob clockwise or counter clockwise? :)
Well, if we're going to discuss something IMPORTANT.....

I eat around both ends - first the left and then the right. Then I typewriter across until I'm done. And I don't leave little bits of corn the way some people do. My cob is as clean as a whistle when I'm done.

I also like the little plastic yellow corn holders - I get a couple dozen each summer at the grocery store and don't worry if they get lost or thrown out.

Now, what about buter? In a good corn week, I dedicate a stick of butter to corn and just roll the hot corn on the butter. Otherwise, I'll cut from a stick and use a knife to spread, then dunk the ear in the melted butter as needed.

Ah, life's important decisions...

We have trash bins in all of my local stores, so I husk the corn there. I do it to avoid mess in the house - the silk gets everywhere if I wait to husk the ears at home. Incidentally, I eat the corn the same day I buy it.

disneysteve, lots of people have siad they don't like the mess in their homes and that is why they clean it at the store - you must not like that answer and are waiting for someone to have a "lightbulb" moment and declare that they once husked at the store but will now and forevermore do it at home b/c of disneysteve's comments. Some of us are just going to prefer husking the corn at the store rather than at home. Sorry you don't like our reasons.

At the store. Take them home prepped, no silk in my kitchen, no rotten ears or worms.

Well, actually the answer just surprised me. I thought maybe someone would tell me that it stayed fresher or some other reason.

I know when DD does the husking, it is a mess. No question about that. ;)

The stores around here do have trash bins, so obviously they expect some people to do the job there. I just didn't know why.

We do a lot of cooking and a lot of food prep, so I guess we are just used to making a meal meaning making a mess. Doesn't bother us. No offense intended to the in-store huskers.

I have never seen anyone husk corn in a store before. If you don't want it husked why don't you just buy the un husked ones??

On behalf of my DH who is a produce manager at a large local chain.....If you are going to husk it at the store.......PLEASE DO NOT THROW IT ON THE FLOOR. Or stuff it amongst the rest of the corn. If there is a trash can use it. If there is not a trash can....they don't want you doing it. DH spends alot of time cleaning up other peoples messes. Just from the other side of the coin. :wave2:

Locally they bring in a load of corn everyday. They are placed unhusked in the front bin. Those not purchased are then husked and packaged the following day. A day is a long time in the life of an ear of corn. Not nearly as fresh, sweet, not to mention the vitamin loss.

I make no judgment on people who do or don't.

I don't mostly because I don't have the time to spend in the store. I need to get in and get out before my kids go nuts (or if I manage to go with out them, back because someone is watching them.) Either way I don't mess around with it in the store. I used to pull it back, but now I just look them over and feel them in the store, it seems to work for me. Also what many people say, it stays fresher that way. I try to buy corn the day I eat it, but it doesn't always happen that way. I ate some yesterday we bought 3 days before (husk on) and it was GREAT! (Good time of year for corn.)

If I was only buying one to 3 ears maybe, but I tend to buy a bunch. Everyone loves it, and corn on the cob is the only veggie I can get Little PhD to eat currently.

My stores normally provided the bins. I don't like back log trying to pick out corn though.

Never buy the pre husked corn. It isn't as fresh or good as the stuff in the bin.

Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. I only do it if there is a trash can and the vegie dept is not crowded. So hopefully, I am not considered rude...I never leave a mess. :)

I tend to get the corn silks everywhere at home for some reason so it is neater if I do it at the market.

I do it at home, and put the leaves and and all in the compost.

Strange, I was thinking about this last week.

Up until about 2 years ago, we never saw garbage cans near corn in a grocery store. Then all of a sudden I started to see people shucking corn right there and leaving the husks on the produce counter. That happened for a bit and then there were garbage cans near the corn and now virtually everyone shucks corn at the store (except me). It stays fresher in the husk. So I don't.

At my grocery store, it is not just any old garbage can by the corn. There is actually a shelf built around the can so you can shuck away and neatly push the mess into the bin. As for the people that wonder why I don't just buy the pre-husked corn, it is a lot cheaper to get the corn and "do-it-yourself". I only do it in the store when I am eating it the same day. I only do it at the store because it saves me from having to have a mess when I am at home. BTW, I live in upstate NY and it's pretty common to see a can by the corn. It's pretty funny to hear all your opinions not that it really matters where you shuck it. :rotfl:

ditto

I buy the corn at a local farm. They use the husks on the farm - so I shuck it there since they use it, less mess at home, and when I get home to cook it is husked and less of hassle later.

I've never in my life seen anyone husk corn at the store, and I'm in IL, prime corn country! Here it's always sold by the piece, not by weight, so maybe that's why. I do peel it back a bit to make sure it's not rotton, bug infested, or half eaten by some crow, but you'd never mistake that for husking!

While I do not shuck the entire ear in the store (easy enough for me to do that at home), I do peel the husk back a bit. You asked why?

Because my local grocery (Publix) insists on putting the bins of corn all right next to each other (bin of yellow, bin of white, bin of bi-color). If I have a hankering for white corn, I like to make sure that it *is* white corn before I get it home.

They do that around here too. I hate that. I don't want yellow corn, ever. I want white corn. I wish they would separate them.

I've never seen ANYBODY husk corn at the store--maybe it's a regional thing?? Around here, everybody pulls the husk back a bit to make sure the corn is OK.

I like to microwave my corn in the husk (easier even than boiling, and as tasty or better) so I prefer to buy corn with husks. Otherwise I wrap the corn in a damp paper towel and microwave it.
