Do you have your kids do workbooks or similar in the summer?

since my kids started school I've always had them do workbooks over the summer. Just a few days a week, maybe half an hour or an hour total, to help keep their math skills up in particular. When they were younger they loved doing them, last year they weren't as engaged or interested.

Now that they are older (going into 6th and 8th) I'm thinking about just skipping it. They have summer reading for school (they read a ton anyway). I haven't decided yet which way I'll go, but am curious what others do

Not at those ages I didn't- when she was in k-2 she liked tog do those so we did but otherwise they already get summer reading and math so that is enough. This year she has summer physics, global, lit, and reading homework and projects. The projects are going to be an issue since some are group things and we will be away on vacation from July 5 until August 28th.

yes I have my kids read for an hour a day, and do 30 min of a math program on the computer. as a teacher I feel that it's important to keep up on their skills during the summer. yes I want my kids to enjoy their summer but I don't want them to lose what they learned during the year. I always buy a program for the grade they will be going into in the fall. we also like to do learning type field trips during the summer.

a suggestion since she will take the gobal regents next june have her save all her notes from this year, and get the study guide from the book store. half the test is on stuff from 9th grade and teacher's never review stuff from the year before .

I have summer workbooks for my rising 4th grader and my rising 7th grader. Starting tomorrow they will also be required to read at least 20 minutes a day. I am waiting on their required reading lists from our school, so until we get that they can read whatever interests them.

9th and 10th is AP World - next year is AP Global

No I don't.

We do a summer reading challenge through Barnes ans Noble to get a free book :) Check it out in your area. They read anyway for fun so why not?

We do some math workbooks, lots of reading, listen to history on CDs, and take lots of educational field trips to museums, historic sites, cultural events, and such. We usually participate in a drawing program over the summer. I make it fun and interesting, just as I did when I homeschooled them, but the main focus is enjoying time together, going to the beach, camping, visiting friends, swimming at the pond, etc.

My older HS boys will be busy with AP work and summer reading; other than that they'll be doing what they enjoy over the summer. The past years they were taking courses at a university, but the program changed this year and doesn't fit in with their cross country practice schedules.

Only when they were little, or if the teacher recommended extra practice over the summer.
We still make them do mental math at the grocery store, when we go out to eat, etc.

Our school sends home math packets and a reading list. They have to complete the packets and do book reports, to be turned in at the beginning of the school year, as part of their first quarter grades, guaranteeing they can hate me all summer long for continuing to nag them over homework :/

Yes - my kids read 20 minutes a day at least (that's the minimum, but they all love reading so they do a lot more). My rising 4th grader is doing math lessons , as well as cursive writing practice on the iPad and on paper, and taking an online computer coding course. He also writes in his journal every day. The rising 3rd grader is doing the cursive practice, math drills, and the paragraph writing, and my rising first grader is doing the math and the paragraph writing.

In addition to that we'll do a lot of fun things - 3 weeks of travel, swim team, etc. It's a busy, fun summer!

Only when they are annoying me.

Them: "I'm bored!"
Me: "You have hundreds of dollars of electronics. 3 bikes. 3 parks within walking/biking distance. Games and movies. Toys. Exercise equipment. A cat. Baby bunnies in the backyard. A Turtle. Dishes that need to be done. A bathroom that needs to be cleaned. Need I go on?"
Them: "But I did all that stuff alreadyyyyyyyy!!!"
Me: "go get that workbook on your desk and do three pages."
Them: "NOOOOOOO!!!!! I knew you would say that!!"
Me: "Then *why* did you come to me complaining????"
Them: "This is the worst summer ever!!"

I love working from home, but I can seriously do without that conversation on a daily basis.

Haha...I tell mine to go complain to their teachers because if I had it my way, there would be no homework for them to complain about.

It's no fun being the mom!
