Do you have to request a NON-smoking room? How about NON-connecting?

I recently stayed at a hotel (not Disney) in which we were given a "non-smoking" room that reeked of smoke. It was too late (to me) to switch rooms and it was only for one night, so I just tolerated it. The next day when we got home, the clothes that had been in our luggage reeked of smoke! I couldn't believe that it could be so permeating!! I vowed never again to put up with a room that reeks of smoke!

My question is, do I have to actually request non-smoking at Disney resorts? Or, is it a given that if you have no preference indicated, they will put you in non-smoking? Also, I hate, hate, hate connecting rooms (it just freaks me out to have an entry-way to our room inside the room! I know both doors lock, but it still freaks me out!) Should I request non-connecting, or again, is that a given unless you specifically request connecting?

I don't want to make too many requests, but these two things would really be intolerable to me, so I want to make every effort to get them accomodated. Thanks for any input!

I would definitely have your smoking preference noted on the reservation. Since most people want a non-smoking room (often times even the smokers) I would not chance not giving a preference and getting the smoking room.

As far as the connecting room issue goes, I would note that too. Since many of the rooms have the connecting doors, if it means that much to you I would definitely make note of the request.
