Do you have to live in the Disney apartments?

Hey guys. I am applying for Fall 2010 and just wanted to clarify something. I'm going to be graduating from college in May and have absolutely no desire to do the dorm life again (sharing a room, visitor rules, house inspections, etc.). Although I'm sure most people do, are college program participants able to find their own housing. I mean, they can't require you to live in their apartments, right?

Yeah! You can definitely go find your own housing. I think you have to "apply" for it -- but it's not difficult to get out of. You can also choose to live in housing and transfer out when you find your own apartment. Brenna (Berloiz07) probably knows all the details, since she didn't live on-site for her entire program.

The details need to be straightened out prior to your arrival, and you should mention your intent to house offsite during your interview, so things are handled appropriately (the right paperwork is passed along to you, etc). I wouldn't necessarily say it happens all the time and it's easy to get out of housing (it is considered to be a large part of the overall program experience), but it's certainly possible.

After you've arrive, your chances are severely diminished. After becoming a legal resident of Florida and obtaining outside housing (and a lease in my own name for over a month), I was not released from housing for the last month or two of my program in '09. I ate the rent deductions out of my paycheck each week, and technically had two residences: my apartment at Chatham and the apartment I was actually living in. They don't force you to reside in their apartments, but after arrival, you have signed a contract that does stipulate that deductions for rent are valid for the duration of your program - and provisions for exit are not outlined (they're at the sole discretion of Disney Housing's Yield Management) After arrival, the only reasons they generally consider is family having property you can reside in or career advancement (a new position within Disney pending).

Really appreciate the replies! I would love to hear experiences of others who didn't live in the apartments. I am somewhat worried about being able to make as many friends by not living in the apartments, but I just can't see myself in that kind of living situation again.

I sort of did this during my program. I was in a very popular 3 bedroom apartment at Vista Way during my CP during 2008 and it was a blast for the first 6 or 7 months. Aside from some roommate issues, I had no problems with housing. By the end of my program, I was working many more hours (Holiday season) than previously in my program and I didn't have the energy to be dealing with the tension in the apartment on top of the numerous parties that went on. Around that time I was also seeing a girl that was a seasonal cast member in my area, so I spent many a night at her apartment in Kissimmee for the last month and a half of my program. Like one of the previous posters wrote, the contract you sign in the beginning states that the apartment deduction is automatic and valid until you leave the program, so I was paying the weekly rent regardless of the fact that the only time I spent there toward the end was to pop in and get clothes and maybe eat a quick meal.

So long story short, if you arrive and start the program in the Disney housing, expect to have the rent deducted each week whether you actually live there or not.

Hope this helps, good luck!

Just let the recruiter know through email if you intend not to live in housing before you get there. They will send an email back needing to know where you live, why you are there, and if you have a reliable form of transportation. If you can answer all those, then you'll have no problem.
I had a problem with paying the full Program Fee because I wouldn't have access to all the events, and was told numerous times that the Program Fee paid for CP events, yet as an off-site CP, I wouldn't have access to them. Why would you have to pay for events that you couldn't attend? No one could answer me other than "pay, or no job". So I declined to return to the program this Spring. Living in the area, and paying $100 for a job that pays min. wage wasn't worth it.

moviekid - That's very interesting info. I'll have to talk to them about that when (if) I interview. What kinds of events are these? That doesn't make any sense at all.

I absolutely adore Disney, but I'm not willing to do anything to work for them right now.

The events are part of the "living" component. The Disney College Programs office hosts different types of parties and events (Bingo, trips to area attractions, pool parties, movie nights, graduation, etc). In order to attend these events you need to live in the housing units as you need a housing id to get through security. The other way would be for someone at the specific housing complex to sign you in, but that can be a real pain!
