The kids and myself have insurance, DH does not. We pay around $550 per month for myself and 2 kids, with a $7,000 deductible.

We are self-employed. Almost four years ago DH went to a doctor for migranes, after that I changed our insurance, and DH has been denied ever since. Very frustrating for someone willing to pay for insurance but cannot get it.

I have health insurance through my husband which is Blue Cross/Blue Sheild. We did have Aetna and IMHO they where the absolute best. BCBS likes to wait as long as possible to pay. My daughter gets some SSI/Disability, so Medicaid is her secondary, thank God, or we would be homeless. My husband and I have gone through periods of no health insurance, it was rough on both of us. We pay about 168 every two weeks for a family plan.

My school requires us to have health insurance. They also require that unless we're covered under our parent or spouse, that we buy their insurance, or we prove that we have Medicare. And since Medicare can take 6 months to process, you have to have their insurance in the meantime. And how much does their insurance cost? Nearly $5000 a year. We pay $15 for doctors visits, $100 for ER visits, $10 for preferred generics, $20 for non-preferred generics, and $50 for brand name drugs. Although it does cover pretty much everything, and I don't need any referrals or pre-approvals for MRI's or anything. Still, I wish my school would require us to buy a cheaper plan!

We are covered through DH's plan at work and pay approximately $7,000 per year for coverage. When I first graduated from college, I couldn't find a job in my field and worked as a temporary for 1 1/2 years. Not having insurance was scary. I was always worried I was going to be in a car accident or develop appendicitis or something.

Yes. We live in Canada & have public insurance that we pay for through our taxes. We also pay for private insurance that covers prescriptions, dental, vision etc.

I have insurance through my employer, which they pay for. However DH and DD do not, as adding even one of them brings my monthly take-home down to under $400. We had to do the math a couple of times, it was unbelieveable.

I am petrified to have them without insurance; I plan to pay for the school's accident policy as soon as I can afford it. Better than nothing, I guess. :guilty:

I don't think you will get results that represent all of America. I don't think we have a sampling of all types of incomes & jobs here on the DIS. The folks working minimum wage jobs with no benefits and those on public assistance probably don't have trips planned to go to WDW. Well, most of them probably don't. There may be a few here.
I think you'd be surprised....

We have it through my husbands employer. Our medical, vision, and dental run about $600/month for employee, spouse and children. I consider us to be fortunate for it to be that low.

If I got it through my employer it would be about $950/month. It is around $700 for an employee/children, without a spouse. I have no clue how some of the employees pay that.

Yes here in Massachusetts you are required to have health insurance. My husband and I are covered under his employers policy. Sorry not sure of the cost that we pay. I believe his company pays 20% and we pay 80%.

We have insurance through my dh's employer. Several years ago they were laying people off like crazy and I took my current job (after being a SAHM) solely so that I could get insurance for the family if my dh lost his job. My dh is an electrician so he could work for himself, but we couldn't afford to pay for health insurance.

I have it through DH's employer, but we pay dearly for me. I am ineligible at my job because I work 19.5 hrs per week (you must work at least 20 hrs per week to buy into the health insurance).

I hate that good health insurance is tied into employment.

It's not. There are plenty of very good individual health plans out there that do not cost that much.

If you are self-employed you can look into a group plan where there is automatic acceptance.

Get individual an individual plan for your DD at least but I would get one for your DH too. In our state an individual plan for a child is only a little over $100/month for a really good plan. Your DH would be in the $200/month range.

I have always had insurance either individual or group. I would get a second or third job if I had to to pay for insurance. My nephew just had his tonsils and adenoids out and the hospital charge alone is $12,000.

The number one cause of bankruptcy in the US is due to medical bills. As you see from the responses here, many people have access to health benefits but it isn't a priority to get it. That is a BIG difference from people not having insurance because they can't get it.

I agree about getting another job to pay for insurance.

We have always paid for our own health insurance, except for 3-years when DH worked at Wal-Mart then $25/paycheck (2xmonth) was taken out of his checks to pay our portion. It was great! That's the one thing I miss about him not working there anymore. Because now, we buy our insurance through Farm Bureau and it's Blue Cross/Blue Shield, $2000 every quarter and we have high deductibles, they don't pay for office visits, etc. And they will probably be raising it again in November. It sucks.

We do have health insurance offered through DH's work. In addition to the employer costs for the plan, we pay ~$3000 in premiums and $3000-$4000 for the deductible and prescription copays per year. Most of those costs are current pre-tax due to our participation in a Health Fund.

I think some uninsured people may think that employer-sponsored health insurance is "free" to the employees who have it. That's why I've posted our expenses... to show that most folks who have insurance are paying through the nose for it.

The poll might be more interesting if you ask if it is employer supplied for free, employer supplied at a change to the employee or if it is paid for entirely by the individual.
Good questions.

ITA.

DH is self employed and ever since we've had kids (23 years) I have only worked per diem so we purchase individual coverage through BCBS. We pay $1314 a quarter for family coverage with $2500 deductible. All well visits are only a $10 co-pay and we can chose out own doctor. DD just got the fairly expensive Gardisil vaccine and it cost us nothing. The price has gone up since the policy holder (me) is over 55 now. Otherwise, I think we have good coverage and I do NOT want to see it change.

Our children do but my husband and I do not.

We are self employed. We looked into private insurance but since I was 10 lbs over their acceptable weight and my dh was 15 over .... We were faced with an astronomical amount per month (1500.00 per month-high deductibles and etc.) or just denied.

We put money into account every month to take care of health needs.

I was thinking the same thing. The demographic of the people here on the DIS is different than the general public who does not have health insurance. The "working poor" cannot afford to vacation at WDW.

To answer the OP, we have health insurance through my DH's employer (a major computer company). The premiums and deductibles continue to rise but at least we are covered. I am thankful for that.

My insurance is offered through my employer and so far, has been pretty good. I had to go into an Urgent Care center on July 5 for a serious laceration on my arm (probably should have gone to the ER the night before but I didn't think it was as bad as it was...they spent close to an hour and a half just stitching the thing closed). I ended up paying $50 for the whole thing, including copay, and I think $10 total for Rx antibiotics and Tylenol 3.

I am insured through my work, employer paid. I have dd on a private paid policy (cheaper than adding her to mine). Dh does not have insurance--way too expensive.

Oldest ds has great insurance for him and his wife through his employer (his is paid by the employer, hers is not).

Younger ds does not have insurance at this time, neither does his gf or my granddaughter (the baby is on medicaid at this time)--hopefully jobs will be opening up soon and that will all change for them. If he can get a position in his chosen field he will be able to get great insurance.

I feel for you! My sister and her four kids are covered, her DH is not. Self employed as well. He was recently diagnosed with cancer and it has been horrible for them. He was healthy, athletic, picture of health before. The bills are outlandish, and that's with the state care at the teaching hospital. It's scary for all of them.
