Do you have Debs in your neck of the woods?

The big one here is the DAR Ball (Daughters of the American Revolution)-your anscestor had to have fought in the Revolutionary War-and "He" is named with the write up of the young lady and her parents. its a big Society event =mostly for High school senior girls.

I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, and a Junior League like organization puts on a Deb Ball for high school seniors. It's quite involved and done for charity (with, ahem, a $20,000 min donation). Each girl generally hosts their own party and attends all the other deb parties, and then there is a huge Ball with the big white dress. Deb season goes on for a looonnng time :) There's also required community service events.

While I did not participate (I pretty much laughed out loud when I got the letter, the $$ alone was out of control), a number of people in my school did. I think they all enjoyed the process, but frankly, it's more a status thing than anything else.

would never do it, but at least I would qualify!

There are two groups of debs in Atlanta. Both raise money for charities. The deb experience is one year long with periodic parties, often hosted by the deb families. The debs do volunteer work during their year on behalf of their deb group. It's quite popular with the old Atlanta society crowd.

I'm pretty sure they still have them in the NYC/LI area - can't recall any upstate..

I guess I always viewed them as a way of people flaunting their wealth - and attempting to find an equally wealthy young man for their DD's..

Of course that may not be the case at all - and I would love to actually see one - but I don't think that's going to happen in "my" lifetime.. (Well - maybe if they have "Senior Debs or Cotillions" for folks on a fixed income)..:rotfl::rotfl:

I don't remember any in BROOKLYN :lmao::lmao:

There are debs in Atlanta????? If there are they haven't included ME! :laughing:

in the South a curtsey is surely involved, and in Texas it is traditional your nose touches the floor when you bow - it is called the Texas Dip, and is known at deb balls internationally!

I can't comprehend how that is remotely possible... at least in a ballgown!

THAT's what Donna did on 90210 - the Texas Dip!! :lmao:

There are women who coach the debs - and trust me, it IS possible! And quite beautiful - it is the getting back up that is the hard part....

Here's wikipedia's listing of deb balls:

Robin, the Atlanta debs make their debut the year they go to college. I can't believe you weren't invited. You must have been too cool or too pretty and the other girls were jealous. :thumbsup2

Yeah, THAT'S WHY!!!! :lmao:

No I came to Atlanta at the ripe old age of 31, WAY out of the deb stuff. This old Bklyn girl would rather die than curtsy, ain't gonna happen!! :laughing:
