Do you have "class"?

Most schools operate from the middle-class norms . These norms and hidden rules are not directly taught in schools. Homework was given as an example for teachers. We expect our students to do homework, but if the student lives in poverty, they often face considerably more challenges to completing homework. Suppose, the electricity has been turned off or they are staying at the YMCA because they were kicked out of their apartment. Or the child is home alone, babysitting younger siblings while mom works a night job. Maybe neither of the parents can read and help with homework and the child has no phone to call a classmate for help.

Thank You very much for the reminder! School starts tomorrow and it is good to keep things in perspective. I will be helping out the kids alot at school this year.

I like your post Tigeroo. Alot of great points!:D

Great thread phantom!

Personally, I know a few women who are in Junior Leauge and would consider them Middle Class, but maybe upper middle class.

I thought this was a great post with very insightful answers.

Coincidentaly I had a conversation with my DH yesterday about one of the main reasons I admire the US (and countries like Australia,NZ etc.) this is that they don't have the rigid class system like we do in the UK.

I'm not saying there isn't 'old' money and snobbery in the US but I'm sure if someone makes money and moves in different circles they won't be excluded because they don't talk with cut glass vowels and didn't go to the right school/university.Unlike the films you see with English actors,we don't all talk like the Queen, and I speak quite nicely enough anyway! Am I right about the acceptance of people who 'better' themselves?

TiggersMom you summed it up perfectly for me.The reality is there IS socio-economic class,I am more interested in the 'class' no time or money can give you. Some people are born with it,grace and dignity:) I hope that I have it,time will tell!

Bev,please don't let my post stop you from posting here. If my post offended you, I'm very sorry. That was not my intent.

Don't apologize. Your post was not offensive at all. In fact none of the posts in the thread are offensive now. The post that I felt was insulting has mysteriously vanished. Either the author of the the post or the moderators removed it. Stange (I'm hearing the "Twilight Zone" music now)! I would think I had imagined it all but I notice that JohnTBap addressed it also in her post. The post I was referring to told me that my post was too long and to get a life. That's why JohnTBap (and I) said we have a life. With that post gone, it makes no sense. Oh well, all is fine now and no reason for anyone to feel they can't disagree with my post. I really do like hearing both sides to any posts even if it is my post they are disagreeing with.

Bev
