Do you have bunkbeds?

How have you liked them - or not?
We're checking them out trying to decide if that's what we want to do...

My other question is = how much room do you need from the top of the bunk to the ceiling? How do I know if it will fit or my dd will knock herself out when she sits up....

We have them right now, but I can't wait to get rid of them. First they are a pain to make. Mine are not that stable. But, the biggest issue was last week, our kids were sick. DS could not get out of bed and got sick all over both beds. He did not tell us and we found it the next morning. Both kids ended up sleeping in vomit all night. That was the last straw!! I am in the process of picking out new twin beds right now. I am sure that some people love them, but they did not work out for us. Good luck to you!

Ours are plenty stable (the wood kind with a built in desk) but they are such a pain to make. The top one has rails all around the mattress and you almost cannot put a fitted sheet on there.

We have only 1 child & we still got bunkbeds--so convenient for sleepovers & DS would 'camp out' in our room & we'd let our neices take the bunks-so these really worked for us!
we have the type with a desk w/ drawers at one end & 6 drawers facing out toward the room. That arrangement sure saved a lot of space
Some bunks can be disassembled & used as stand alone beds. A nice feature if your needs should change
You must be absolutely sure the bunk beds are safe--that is, sturdily & well built so that the top one is fully supported. Some years ago there were incidents where the top bunks on some manufacturers' beds came crashing down on the bed below, with grim results. So perhaps do try them out--with 2 adults--in the store--How old is your DD? make sure she cannot roll between the side rails.
Measure your ceiling height, measure the bunk bed height-- snap a line on your wall to get a good idea of where the top bunk will come up to. I think we have about 30"-36" to spare, but ceiling heights vary greatly

another possibility is a trundle bed set up--you know where the 2nd bed rolls out for use from under the main bed. It can be the type that remains on the floor or scissors up to lie even with the main bed. again be very positive the scissor assembly is childproof & very safe

DD turned her top bunk into an SPCA for stuffed animals .She then wanted to put her NEW train under her bed .So I killed 2 birds with 1 stone and am in the process of building a train garden on the top now.Her bottom is aslo a Futon ( Full size) that is very nice with her small room.

My DD had bunks for 5 years and I just sold them this week. I agree with the other poster who said they are a pain to make up. We also had a "vomit issue" with ours!

We recently bought DD a loft bed that has the bunk on top and dresser,desk, book shelves and play space underneath all in the floor space of a twin bed. Floor space was an issue and we love this arrangement. I got one of those bed caps and they are great. Love this arrangment

We had them for awhile. The DSD on top covered the ceiling with stickers on night. Hmmmmmm. That was fun when we moved.
Also, since the one on the bottom had a later bedtime she would wake her sister up when it was time to go to bed. Beds were pretty stable so I peeked in behind her one night. Seems she was shaking the bed on purpose to wake up sis so they could chat. We bought a house and they got separate bedrooms - kept the bunks for the older one that used the top as a dresser/bookcase/whatever else she could put up there and claimed she cleaned her room. I found that I appreciated them more when only one kid was sleeping in them.

so is there a place I can go to look @ make sure that I have enough ceiling clearance between top of bunk & ceiling??

Most Mattrest places sell bunkbeds as well so you could get an idea of clearence there .Just be careful we had to take DD ceiling fan paddles off or she might have lost an ear or head.

I've got the measurements of the set we're looking @ --but I just don't know if that's enough room for her to sit up-----maybe I'll measure her from her waist to her head & guess from that?!?

Unless you have very low ceiling I can't imagine there should be a problem. I hated our bunks. What you do have to be careful about is the windows in a room. DH was afraid of placement because he knew a kid who put his foot through a window in a bunk. Ceiling fans can not be used.
