Do you have an all time favorite book?

as a kid, my favorites were the "Little House" series, the "black Stallion" series and the "all of a Kind family" series.

I remember having this discussion once before and you mentioning the All of a Kind family series. I had forgotten all about them until you mentioned them. I loved, loved, loved these books! They brought me into a world that was so foreign, but so intriquing. Those books were the first exposure I had to people who weren't Italian and Catholic. I'd love to find a copy of them, I wonder if they are still in print. Do you know?

As a child - The Little House series, Black Stallion series (actually, ANY horse books) and the Hardy Boys series were among my favorites

As a teen - George MacDonald was my favorite author as a teenager

As an adult - Can't really pick a fav, at least not that I've read over and over and over. I've probably read more C.S. Lewis as an adult than any other individual author, though.

ETA: Oh, I forgot another of my favs as a child (that I'll still pull out from time to time as an adult): Madeleine L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time.

Gees, can you ask a harder question?! I guess if I had to choose, it would be...The Blue Sword by Robin McKinnley. But right now I am in love with the Anita blake series by Laurell K Hamilton.

"The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein
&
"Lord of the Rings" By J.R.R. Tolkien

Almost anything by Agatha Christie. I own all of her books and read them over and over again. I love them even though I already know the endings.

To Kill a Mockingbird - I love this book and have read it so many times I lost count.

Larry McMurtry is my fave author & "Lonesome Dove" is the best book I've ever read. If you like western fiction or non-fiction & you haven't read LD, do yourself a favor & read it ASAP!

P.S. I'm currently in the middle of McMurtry's "Berrybender Novels."

The Red Badge of Courage was good too.

Oooooh, I loved this too. Haven't thought about that book in many years.

I like this thread. :)

The Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey are good, too. I remember finding these books while I was in high school. Now, I have them all!

My favorite book and movie is Gone With the Wind.

The book is better but I love Vivian Leigh and Clark Gable in the movie. The book describes landscaping perfectly and made me feel like I was there. Plus-who doesn't love Scarlett O'Hara?

Briar Rose--I had to laugh! I feel exactly the same way about the Brontes. Love Jane Eyre--but I wanted to beat Cathy from Wuthering Heights with a big stick! I was lucky enough to be able to go to the Bronte home in Haworth last summer--they had to drag me out. It was great!

If anyone is looking for books that both you and your young teenagers can enjoy--I highly recommend this series by Lois Lowry--The Giver, Gathering Blue, and the Messenger. My daughter had to read them in school and loved them so much--she had me read them so she could talk to me about them. I read the Giver on a Saturday morning when I should have been running errands, but I couldn't put it down.

My favorites are a tie between "The Stand" and "It" both by Stephen King. I can read them again and again.

Oh my gosh! I've never met anyone who has read this series, and now I have two in one day! I loved these books when I was a kid! I still have my copies!

The Famous Five series by Enid Blyton (pretty much anything by her)

Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt books

The Hunt for the Red October

Arabian Nights

Brother Grimm's Fairy Tales

WOW!!! I was just going to post that as one of my childhood favorites!! I scoured ebay last spring to find a complete set for my DD (age 7) and we are busy reading them together!!

Also loved the Narnia series as a kid too.

As an adult...

Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving
Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner

I'd also echo Lord of the Rings and To Kill a Mockingbird as others have mentioned.
