Do you have a whiny (or verbal) DOG?

Inspired by the whiny cat thread...

We have a puppy (9 months old) who whines CONSTANTLY. She whines when she's in her crate, when she's outside, when she's inside but wants to go out, when she's trying to get petted and when she's just laying on the floor. It is really really irritating. The only time she isn't "talking" is when she's eating, or when it's bedtime (she sleeps in her crate and when lights go out she shuts up).

We love her and she is shaping up to be a good dog, but this is driving us nuts! We've tried completely ignoring it for weeks. We've tried the doggy dazer (think electronic dog whistle). We've tried a sharp "NO" when she starts. It's like she thinks we're carrying on a conversation or something.

Any ideas? Anyone dealt with an extra whiny dog?

Yes, and he drives me INSANE!!!! He's a lab, and he doesn't bark, he whines, all the time and it absolutely drives me up the wall. For a big dog, you'd think he'd have a big bark. Nope. Ugh... It's a good thing he's dh's dog.

Amen. That is our dog exactly... except we have a she dog and she's a Brittany not a Lab... She even whines when you pet her. Puh-lease just SHUT UP already. :)

Seriously, she's a sweet dog, but so stubborn.

You have no idea how often I say "shut up" to this dog all day long. Even the two year old does now. He's so whiny about everything!!! I get up, he whines. Its time to go out, he whines. I pet him, he whines. Arg! :furious: Don't get me wrong, I love that dog, but we certainly have a love hate relationship.

Oh goody...
Oh, yeah.

When DH comes home from work, Simon freaks out with excitement. Then DH goes into our room to get changed, and Simon whines to the point of sounding like an injured animal, he's so distraught about being separated again from DH for another two minutes. DH is out of town now, and Simon has been laying around quietly whining and sighing. One day down, 5 to go. Poor Simon...tough life.

My basset is whining right now. She has very long, thick nails, so she's also click-clacking on the kitchen tile. She's done this since she was a puppy-- nothing could be done to shake it. Once she starts barking, too-- forget it. She thinks she's a person and enjoys "talking."

Our 5 year old Golden "talks". He also sighs, groans and snores. If you remember the soldier who came home from Afghanistan and the whining dog- that's our dog greeting people after they have been gone. He sighs when the hound steals his toys and won't let them have it, or he wants what you are eating (lays his head on the chair and "sighs" these huge, long, mournful sighs as if he hasn't eaten in YEARS!). He has different "barks" for needing to be let out, wanting to be fed, chasing the cats, barking at a "stranger" or barking at "family". I can often tell which cat he is bothering by the tone of his bark. He also snores really really loudly at night. My DH, who is not a dog lover, even finds him amazingly "verbal". Strangest and most loveable dog ever....too bad he doesn't have the "brains" to go with his verbosity! For all his talking, he is a, well, not the brightest golden in the litter!
