I am thinking of having a tutor for my DD this summer. She needs some extra help with math especially.

How much do you pay?
How much time per week does your child see the tutor?
Any other comments/ tips/ advice?

We have had a highschool kid for DD that we paid 15 dollars for 30 minute sessions after school
I understand real teachers around here make about 50/hour

Does your school offer an extended school year/summer session for students? Our school offers a half day ESY for the month of July for all families interested not just kids with IEP's- they even run the busses as usual.

I have a math tutor for my daughter that comes once a week. I pay her $25/hr.

I agree with the idea to ask at the school to see what programs they offer. Our school also has a program for students who need extra help similar to this one... 3 or 4 weeks during the summer (half days, I think). It's free, but it isn't widely advertised. Teachers have to "invite" students to participate.

Also, you could ask the teacher for books and/or advice on areas that need particular work.

Does your daughter need to improve her reading also? If so, ask your library if they offer a summer reading program. Ours has a great program where the kids get raffle tickets for every so many pages they read. The kids then submit their raffle tickets for a chance to win prizes. My kids enjoy reading, but they are more willing to read when they think they have a chance of getting a cool prize.

One of the teachers at DS' school (not his own teacher) tutors in summers. We are paying her $25/hr, 2 hours per week, evenings at her home.

DD tutored a couple of kids in French this year. She did not get paid. She was asked to do it by her old French teachers and a thank you was all she got. Both of her kids passed and the parents thanked her profusely.

She might be tutoring one of them this summer to get him ready for French II. It is nice to see the rates on this thread because we had no idea what was a fair price for her to charge.

I have an older child. She is 16 and I looked into some SAT tutoring for her. She does not need tutoring for school, but completely freaks out on standardized tests so I thought a tutor might help. I had never looked into any kind of tutoring before.

I called one highly recommended woman and she charges....get ready for this....$125 per hour and she wants a commitment of at least 10 sessions. :headache: That is completely out of my price range.

DD15 - freshman have AP math tutor - $80/hr once a week. ex-teacher, going rate.

We would hire a math tutor for dd in high school. There was a bunch of teachers that did math tutoring. They do it to make ends meet that is for sure. We paid 45.00/hr and they were worth every penny. It helped her with other classes and how to take the tests as well.

Now dd is about to hit college and we told her to get a math tutor right away. She does get the stuff eventually but she needs a little one on one at times with algebra.

However, she is OUR math tutor for our soon to be 7th grade dd. We are in trouble.;)

4 summers in a row and after school was worth every penny still not a math whiz but he did good b's he got an a one marking period i say if you can do it

I tutor high school students and college students in foreign language (mostly French). I am a graduate student with a B.A. in French, FYI. I charge $30/hr. Mostly because that isn't just paying for the time I spend with the student, but also the preparatory work I do BEFORE the lesson (usually at least 30 minutes, sometimes a lot more) of getting notes, materials, examples, and flash-cards gathered.

I think I could probably charge quite a bit more, but most of the reason I tutor is because it helps me keep my language skills up! Hope that helps.

We have middle schooler, DD a tutor.
She is a math teacher in another MS in the same district so she teaches the same thing as DD's teachers. I think this has been invaluable.
We tried the after school in school tutoring but too hectic.
We pay $30.00 per hour. We go to her house and DD goes twice a week.

My daughter tutors math in Fairfax County, VA and gets $50/hour. She has no problem filling all of her spots. She does have one unpaid spot reserved for her little sister, who struggles with math.

If the money is a little tight, there are many websites where you can download math worksheets.

I'm trained as a high school science teacher with a math minor, and I tutor math, physics and chemistry at the international American school here in Chile (I've also taught high school science for five years in Canada). Tutors generally ask $45 an hour here, although I only charge $35 since I do it at my house (and because, well, I'm not really in it for the money). This is about the same rate charged by teachers in British Columbia as well.

If your child is struggling in math, I would try to arrange at least two 1-hour sessions a week over the summer. I have yet to meet a student who can really focus beyond one hour in a tutoring session, so there's no point in paying beyond one hour at a time. However, one hour a week is not enough to maintain skills between sessions. Even doing two sessions a week, you will need to plan on reinforcing concepts on the days in between to make real progress.

We have a tutor for my 8 year old. She had been having difficulty in math at school. While I feel math competant, she was not taking directions well from us. Having the 3rd person come in has worked much better. She follows a home school curriculum.

My lady has a teacher degree. $24 for the hour. Once a week. She teaches other kids everyday of the week/a couple of hour each day. So, we are small potatoes.

Not sure how much it helps. We haven't had the head butting any longer and my daughter says that it has helped. We don't need a savant, I just wished for her school lessons to be easier for her.

Do you know a home schooling mom? We have many in this area. Perhaps maybe one would step in to tutor your child at a more reasonable price if the going tutor price is too steep in your area. Just a thought.

THanks everyone! Her current teacher is the one who we are looking at for this. I am inclined to do it because he knows her learning style/strengths and knows what they need to have in place before the fall. She struggles and I think some one on one time would benefit.

I have tried at home to do extra with her, but let's just say the cooperation isn't always there!;)

We've tried the summer school program in the past, but I have not been impressed.:rolleyes1

I think it is time to get some extra help for her.
