Do you have a professional email for job search?

Someone suggested I have a "professional" email just for job searching. Do you have one? What are suggested formats? I was using my college email address which is first initiallastname@...... Did a search of this and some people include their profession as part of their email address. What do you do?

Maybe you can see if you can use your first initial/last name or something similiar. I can tell you we just hired a temp at work and while I was going through the resumes I did always look to see what their e-mail address was...I wasn't going to have someone in called sexykitten or crazymom LOL
But, some were just normal e-mails addresses and not their first/last name but it was still ok. Just make sure it is not something that would turn off an employer.

Are you still in college? If not, do not use your college e-mail any longer.

Please do use something simple (so I can type it correctly), and nothing that tells me too much about your personal life. Don't use your kids names or your car model. Do use your own name -- when I get an email from Jane containing John's resume, I wonder if John is computer illiterate, or if Jane is pushing him into a new career against his will. And for Pete's sake, don't use your email account from your current job. If you're using their time and resources to look for a new job, I can't trust you not to screw around here.

I have friends who do recruiting, headhunter work..etc and one of the fastest ways to get your resume dumped is to use an email like sexxxylady69@emailprovider.com or something like that.

By all means look for something like your first and last name..first initial and last name or some variation of that. If you can get it without numbers after it all the better but those aren't that bad if you keep it simple and straightforward. Ssmith7@emailprovider.com or something like that.

I have not seen or heard of people using their profession in their email. I wouldn't do it personally because it is going to make the email too long/cumbersome.

If your college one is simply your initial and last name it should be fine to continue to use (assuming you are still in college. If not I would get a regular one using your name)

I created a new gmail account for the sole purpose of my job search.

FirstNameLastName was taken, so I settled on MsFirstNameLastName@gmail.com

I use a professional Email it is Firstname.Lastname11@emailprovider. The was just added by the email provider.

I use it for a few reasons. Main one being if they are looking for me on facebook it is not the address my account is under.

I used to do recruiting. If you are still in college, your college e-mail is fine. Once you graduate, go with something using your first and last names (or first initial and last name). As others have suggested, try not to use numbers, but if you have a common name you may have to. Just keep it simple.

I do not think that including your profession in your e-mail address is professional or necessary. If you are applying for a specific job, they already know you are interested in that line of work. This is what I did. I chose FirstName.MiddleInitial.LastName@gmail.com. I use it primarily for LinkedIn and my professional membership associations, as well as job hunting.

This. It also limits the positions you can apply for -- in any profession, you have transferrable skills that may take you to another profession (ex. admin. assist to office manager; nurse to case manager, etc.). You don't want to box yourself in.

And for goodness sake, if you are currently working, do not use your work email on your resume and send the materials from there.

when I'm looking for interns for my office, I will reject an application from sexxxiekitten@e-mailprovider.com. Keep it simple and easy to type. If it's too complicated or if I easily mess it up and it bounces back, it makes the person look totally unprofessional.

I also suggest first initial and last name, or first name and last name. It's getting tougher on free services to get just your name, though, so you may need to use your middle initial or a number as well.

These days a private email, facebook, phone. Employers are asking to look at FB pages and I would have a clean, as in no nonsense, one to turn over with things like the public library as 'friends.'

I think I know what the OP means about having the job in the email address (maybe). I know someone in a field whose has an e-mail account through the professional association (I think); so my e-mail address would be 'KTElder@BankingIndustry (no such organization, afaik, and that's not my real name )

I agree with all the previous posts. Keep it simple, keep it professional and use your real name. When receiving emails with resumes I look at everything and take it into consideration that they would do it the same way while working for me

Thanks for the input... I am not using something as in hotmomma@gmail.com LOL. I know better than that. I am still in college (back in 15 years after completing Associate's). Not using current employer email. I do like the input on not using same on as FB! Never thought of that. I just feel like I already have too many emails to keep track of. One for work, one for college, yahoo one created years ago and gmail for my phone......I'm overwhelmed by email Ahhhhh. Thanks!

I would also suggest even if you aren't looking for a job and contacting a government agency or any profession, to use a decent email. I work for the state and we get all kinds of odd email addresses asking for information (we license professionals). I've gotten the sexykitty type emails and it's difficult to take them seriously. Also, sometimes when it comes through, it will be highlighted (if doing any contact through email) so if you use an _ as part of your email, it can be missed. 0 vs o also difficult sometimes to tell the difference. 1 vs l also. (the 1 vs l looks very different on here but on my email server, they are similiar).

I have to also agree with a pp, those who use another person's name, I'm thinking I'm not talking to them but to another person.

Yep. My usual email is my DIS user name @emailprovider, while my job search email is firstname.lastname @emailprovider. I also have an email address for school, which is firstinitiallastname @schooladdress, and an email address reserved specifically for spam. My Facebook is linked to my usual email address, so employers cannot see my Facebook page if they enter the email address that is on my resume. I'm considering setting up a separate Facebook account for job hunting, which will be linked to my job search email...

What you are using....your name alone, is perfect. I wouldn't change it to include a profession. You are a college student looking for a job, I take it? The email at the college domain is great.
